Hi. Interesting project. I congratulate you on your initiative. To make your circuit is possible to use a small microcontroller (PIC12F675) that has 2 digital inputs for buttons (to handle up and down), an analog input for knob and an output with PWM to control the speed of the piston. Other components would be needed but I'm sure that will adapt to the size you need. I recently did a circuit very similar for operating a linear actuator for an industrial printer for raising and lowering a print head (you can check my last completed work). The only question I have is on the piston type or model you want to use. Is it a magnetic piston? or is a linear actuator?. Please I would like to know more detail about that.
