Create video website using VPS and FTP?

I am looking to create a website (or similar), but know next to nothing about programming. I have a subscription to a VPS service called Dreamhost, and have set up a domain and will use an FTP to add files to it. This site will be private (not for any public use), but the files may be shared out (if possible I would like to password protect them). I have the FTP software and have added a test video to the site, but when you visit the site it just appears as the straight forward FTP page. Ideally I would like a standard looking website that I can simply add photos, videos and some documents to, that can then be streamed by myself when I visit the site. If you have any better ideas on how to do this I would be very grateful to hear them (simple talk please). The site can be very simple, I just need it set up, then I can upload the files from my laptop (Macbook Pro). I was going to use a VPS because there will eventually be a very large number of files, many of which could be around 2GB or more in size. For someone that knows what they are doing, this will only take about an hour or two to set up, but I am struggling. If you can help, or have any better suggestions I will be all ears. Thank you
