I have street name data in a PostgreSQL database. PostGIS is installed. The table "map_data" has many fields, but the important ones are ID (Intenger) NAME(char) the_geom(geometry(LineString,4326) Using the inputs Latitude and Longitude I need to return the streen name. Query may need to find nearest street if the co-ordinates do not fall exactly on street.

I can do this. I work with PostGIS on daily basis. I do spatial analysis with milions of records. This is simple query with postgis functions.I can write procedure for you that will return street name from latlong inputs or simple query, what you prefer. I guarantee you will be pleased.
