Fix OpenCart Internal Server Error on IE

We have two websites running and old version of Open Cart (1.5.6). Recently we noticed that neither sites open in Internet Explorer (11), but it loads without issues in all other browsers. Our server support says the problem is not server-related. The problem persists even after switching to a new OpenCart theme. Replacing the OpenCart [login to view URL] file with a simple test message DOES work. I need an OpenCart expert to restore the site on IE and avoid the Internal Server Error that is currently displayed.
