Build index and sorting

I have fixed sizes format binary file (like database table), File potentially can be vey large > 4Gb. It has doubles and fixed size strings only. Separate XML desribes the file: column names, length and type.I need a code which would build an binary index file for thsi file for a selected subset of columns. And then provide fast access to the file based on index. (simlar to what all databases are doing on CREATE INDEX and SELECT ORDER BY). The second library should be able to sort this file. I want to stress that the files will not fit into memory. It should be disk based sort. The code should be written in Java 1.5 (or lower) and includes and ant [login to view URL] and JUnit full test coverage. I have demanding performace requirements so do not overuse "new".
