Setting You are analysts working for a large hedge fund specializing in the luxury goods market. The covid pandemic, the European energy crisis, higher inflation as well as economic uncertainty have dampened demand for luxury goods. Despite the positive stock price performance in the last twelve months, analysts have started to revise their forecasts as they see the luxury retail boom likely to end. The hedge fund manager asks you to assess two market valuations that could represent an attractive bargain. In particular, she wants you to assess the current share prices of Moncler ([login to view URL], +8% LTM (last 12 twelve months)) and Ferrari N.V. (RACE, +45% LTM) and give a sell, buy or neutral recommendation for each. Other large hedge funds have already rotated their portfolios, and your fund wants to take advantage of these opportunities as inflationary pressures may be easing. Your valuation team will prepare a pitch either for Moncler or for Ferrari, advising your fund to either enter a long, short, or neutral position in the stock. Student groups are split up to pitch their assessment of either Moncler or Ferrari. Your task is to prepare a presentation that is to be presented to the hedge fund manager and its board of directors. It is in your interest that the company appreciates your analysis and takes a profitable trading position. Your presentation needs to include the following components: 1. A strategic evaluation of the firm and its competitive environment. This strategic evaluation should feed into the financial evaluation later on (in the estimations of future revenues, investments, costs, and cash flows). 2. A DCF-based valuation of the full enterprise and the company’s equity. Explain what economic development would be necessary to justify your valuation. Your valuation should include a planning period where you project the company’s key financials for a future period (5-10 years) and the terminal value. 3. Run a sensitivity analysis, i.e., check how your estimates change when you adjust the inputs (terminal growth rate, WACC, revenue growth, and margins...). Report and interpret these figures. What is the impact of the sensitivity analysis regarding your recommendation? The hedge fund manager will want to discuss your inputs into the analysis. Make sure you state your assumptions clearly. 4. Additionally, conduct a valuation using multiples – again value the full enterprise and the company’s equity. Choose appropriate multiples (see slide “Often Used Multiples” for ideas) and justify your choice. How do your results compare to your DCF valuation? Suggest how to interpret and aggregate your two results (i.e., DCF and multiples). 5. What is your final recommendation to the hedge fund manager and the board of directors?
