Hi, I think the better choice for this project is used ubuntu, I suggest you should use RDS for the MySQL so that your EC2 don't need too much memory to run the database server. If you still have free tier, you can use 30 GB for EC2 and 20 GB for MySQL on RDS. I can setup 2 IP (free tier). But, if your free tier has gone, I suggest you should use reserved instance because it can save your money minimal 15% / month. I am a computer teacher also as a system & network administrator.
