The initial focus of the Kalamazoo Coalition for the Homeless was to bring individuals and organizations together to coordinate efforts, increase impact and empower change among the unhoused population in the Kalamazoo area. It was created by Leander Rabe as a volunteer based, grassroots movement in December, 2020. Since that time, the Coalition has provided supplies needed for survival to hundreds of individuals, including tents, sleeping bags, heaters and propane, meals, firewood, etc. Within this timeframe, the members of the Coalition have developed strong rapport with the unhoused individuals that were supported. This has allowed the Coalition to learn the specific short and long term needs of these individuals. In addition to the short term goal of helping to keep these individuals safe during dangerous weather conditions, the Coalition has discovered a huge gap in our community’s services. There is not enough adequate transitional shelter for the unhoused. Thus, the long term goal of the Kalamazoo Coalition for the Homeless is now helping to provide transitional shelter and support options. In meeting and collaborating with other community organizations both within and outside of Kalamazoo county, it was decided that in order for the Kalamazoo Coalition for the Homeless to continue this mission, it would be essential to become a 501 (c)(3) organization. The purpose for which the corporation is formed is: To help create transitional and permanent housing in the community, for unhoused individuals over the age of 18 in the county of Kalamazoo. To maximize our impact on current efforts, we will seek to collaborate with other non-profit organizations which fall under the 501 (c)(3) section of the internal revenue code and are operated exclusively for education and charitable purposes. At time, per the discretion of the board of directors, we may provide internships or volunteer opportunities which shall provide opportunities for involvement in said activities and program in order to have a greater impact for change.
