This course teaches the very basics of proofreading. The entry requirements for the course are an excellent understanding of English spelling, grammar and punctuation and wide general knowledge. Those who pass the course will have an awareness of the types of error a proofreader is expected to spot and correct and how to mark those errors on paper and onscreen, including using basic BSI symbols, PDF markup tools and Word's Track Changes.

The PTC's Basic Proofreading course is the most widely recognised proofreading qualification in the publishing industry. It provides the thorough grounding needed to work as a professional proofreader and covers how to mark up copy on screen and on paper, use the British Standards Institution symbols, make informed decisions about what to change and what to leave, follow the instructions of an editor and give clear instructions to a typesetter.

This quarterly English-language magazine is published in The Netherlands. I was responsible for the magazine's book reviews for a number of years. For each 1200-word article, I read and/or researched upcoming fiction and non-fiction titles and selected those that would be most likely to appeal to the magazine's audience. The reviews needed to be brief, at about 100 words each, but informative enough to persuade readers to purchase them from the section's sponsor, an Amsterdam bookstore.
