This is a list of five essay titles each of which explore a current issue in Web technology:

-- Two significant academic ideas proposed in the early 1960’s eventually lead to the development of the World Wide Web: the ‘Global network of Computers and a hypertext Document Distribution System. Licklider who coined the rather extravagant phrase ‘Galactic Network’ outlined in a paper entitled ‘The Computer as a Communication Device’ s , a range of concepts which, a decade later, evolved into the Internet. Ted Nelson used an equally extravagant phrase ‘The Literary Machine’ to describe a network of interlinked textual documents supported by hypertext which evolved into the Xanadu project but became subsumed by the work of Tim Berners-Lee almost three decades later. Assess the relative successes and failures of these two streams of academic thinking and explain why Licklider’s work was embraced by the academic community whereas Nelson’s work was apparently rejected by that very same academic community.

-- SVG is an XML derived solution to the standardisation of graphics content across the client server network. Assess the suitability of this standard as a unified replacement for existing dynamic and static graphics content delivery. Include within the evaluation a comparative analysis of various tools and platforms such as Photoshop, Flash and Silverlight along with SVG editors such as Inkscape.

-- Evaluate the extent to which Web1 Web 2 and Web 3 could be considered a progressive evolution of a distribution standard for the delivery of content across the Internet. Based on an understanding of each of the ‘three purported standards’ consider the relative merits of each approach to document distribution. In answering this question ensure that differences between data -> information -> knowledge are explored along with an assessment of the impact each approach has or will have on delivery of content.

-- Broadly speaking, there are three categories of web mining: content, structural and usage. In providing a clear definition of each, reflect on web mining as a mechanism for driving future developments within the field of Internet Computing. In answering this question attempt to provide reasoned arguments which link together the following concepts and technologies: Structural Entropy; Search Engine Optimisation; usage patterns and statistical analysis and finally screen scrapers.

-- It is commonly believed that humans conceptualise through the use of increasing levels of abstraction to a point of understanding. Typically, understanding arises when data is transformed into information which is then transformed into knowledge and finally wisdom. To what extend does the Java Expert System Shell support this transformational model across the network. Ensure the answer covers the following concepts: Interoperability; The Virtual Machine; Knowledge Representation; Search Space; Logical Inference; Forward and Backward Chaining; Production Rules and Facts (Axioms).

Choose one issue from the list of five and write a 2000 word essay ±10% on the topic. The essay should include example(s) of identified or pre-written code snippets research by you to support your answer where appropriate. Working code is not a requirement.

Deliverables

A compiled Report including:

-- An essay on one of the issues academically and professionally written;

-- Appendices containing any coded examples that might support any technical arguments; (not mandatory)

-- References (Harvard Standard)

-- Bibliography (10 or more referecnces, 3 books, 2 journals/books, websites (excluding wikipedia))
