NASA Challenge: Design a Logo for Logistics Reduction Project

Résumé du concours

The main goal of the LR project is to decrease the dependence on earth resupply for space missions. This is done via direct mass reduction, re-purposing logistics, and conversion of waste into useful by-products (gases, water, solids). We are trying to pack everything for Mars but our suitcase is too full. So we need to be smart about what we take, how we maximize the use of those items, and create new uses for the items once they’ve met their original purpose.

o What do we consider logistics? Crew consumables (food, packaging, clothing, etc), automation of logistics management, waste management

o The LR project is developing 5 technologies:
- Advanced Clothing System (ACS) - to directly reduce the mass and volume of clothing needed to be flown. Antimicrobial treatments are applied to current and lighter weight commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) exercise clothing to investigate if they could be used for longer periods of time. Longer wear clothing will change the break-even point for laundering (vs. clothing disposal) sufficiently to delay development until Mars surface missions are planned.

- RFID-Enabled Autonomous Logistics Management (REALM) - Use radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies and 3D localization and complex event processing to enable automatic inventory tracking as resources move around a vehicle. REALM will reduce crew time in locating stored items in densely packed areas and enable the location of lost items.

- Multipurpose cargo transfer bags (MCTBs) – Reusing the logistics suitcases (MCTBs) for constructing crew quarters, privacy or sound-adsorbing partitions, contingency water storage or waste water processing units, and dense-area RFID enclosures for REALM. Reuse of the MCTB logistics carriers prevents the need to fly separate items for the hardware listed.

- Heat Melt Compactor (HMC) - Conversion of waste and used logistical items to useable products. Waste items are heated and mechanically compacted into stable tiles that can be used for radiation shielding. Additionally, water is recovered for life support processing. For a one-year mission, it is estimated that HMC could recover ~10 cubic meters of habitable volume, produce over 800 kg of radiation shielding tiles, and recover 230-720 kg of water.

- Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) - Reduce mass and volume from the current state-of-the-art toilet systems and promote consumables and hardware sharing between vehicles reducing overall integrated mission logistics.

Submission Criteria and Deliverables:
o The recycle symbol is typically the first thing that comes to mind when you think of logistics reduction. However, we want to move beyond that symbol and stand out on our own. Related themes to consider are: earth independence, pioneering mars, etc

o Logo must be 4 colors or less of your choice and you may include black and white as well. Please stay away from gradients, as they will not be able to be easily reproduced across all media.

o You must show your logo on a white and black background. You must also identify your colors.

o Source File Requirements: All original vector source files of the submitted design. Files should be created in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and saved as layered AI or EPS files. Note that PSDs saved as EPS files are not true vector / scalable files and will not be accepted. All non-standard Windows/Apple fonts must be listed in a text file within your Submission Zip file. Include the name of the font and a link to where it can be downloaded/purchased. DO NOT include any font files in your submission or source files.

o Preview Image Requirements: Please create your logo preview image as one (1) 1024x1024 JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi. Show your logo on BOTH a black and white background.

o Stock Imagery Requirements: Stock imagery is not allowed in this contest. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you.

Lol at the winning pic, It's not even a logo, the mars surface in the image only proves that we were not contesting for logistics reduction of earth but of mars. Thanks for the lack of insight NASA (fail). Congrats winner :)

Thanks Umairazam for the WALL-E / EVE connection. Last year, I actually bought a Christmas tree ornament of WALL-E because of that idea. WALL-E was a trash compactor which represents one of our technologies but does not convey general recycling (just preprocessing!). One limitation we do have is that we can't use trade mark images or ideas which WALL-E and EVE certainly are! But see the move and improve your recycling and reuse at home - the Earth is depending on it :)

In response to eshasem's question about 'what the do we use these logos for?' Good question! Idea is a readily regonized graphic that other projects, NASA people can easily recognize and know what that info or activity is related to. Important for a project like LR where we may have 4-9 individual technologies under development at same time. They are used for a variety of things but in general the intent is that is something we can use on project presentations' (think PowerPoint) title page (logo could be larger and more detailed), the top header of presentation slides (logo would be smaller and less detailed), project posters at public events, sometimes even use logo embroider on shirts (why

Although I don't have enough skills and time to design these concepts, but I propose following 2:
    1) Eve(with NASA logo on her chest) trying to pull a weight up while Wall-e(with LR on his chest) also gives assistance in that.
    2) A muscle man(may have NASA logo on him) trying to walk with a weight on his shoulders. A balloon(with LR on it) is attached to the weight.
    Cheers
