I use Picasa to edit images and will have Photoshop soon. I will also research non-copywrited images according to your specs., and use those for editing if required. In my example (original image, plus edited version provided.) I have cropped Gandhi's face out of a poster, changed the color to sepia and applied other various filters to achieve the final result.
