Synopsis Clinical and Pathological Features of Retinoblastoma: Introduction: Retinoblastoma is a rare, cancerous tumor of a part of the eye called the retina. Retinoblastoma is a form of cancer arising in children in their early years. The disease can occur any time from when a child is still in the womb up to the age of about five years. It affects about one in 20,000 children and accounts for about 3% of all cancers for children. Retinoblastoma is caused by a mutation in a gene controlling cell division, causing cells to grow out of control and become cancerous. In the developed world, Rb has one of the best cure rates of all childhood cancers (95-98%),[1] with more than nine out of every ten sufferers surviving into adulthood. It is one of the most curable cancers. But the cost of cure sometimes is blindness. If both eyes are affected, which happens often, then the children go blind, as the only treatment might be to take out both eye.
