MASK-AID to the rescue N95 masks serve an important purpose of protecting users from breathing in contaminated air, particularly during a pandemic. But as any wearer knows, they are pretty uncomfortable to use. Clamped snugly over the nose and mouth, the N95 masks were a common sight among healthcare workers during the H1N1 and Sars outbreaks. Being 95 per cent effective in filtering out particles of 0.3 microns and above, these masks are helpful in preventing the spread of airborne germs. The problem is, users find it hard to breathe and are, in fact, inhaling some of their own carbon dioxide. To ease the stuffiness, users may even resort to loosening and taking off their masks from time to time to let in fresh air. This is obviously risky.
