The main idea of the project was that a double negation leads to something positive. Therefore, negating on one hand problem of pedestrian traffic, and on the other the issue of industrial heritage should bring us closer to a positive result. The main purpose was to create an attractive public space that could generate an active urban life. Through this kind of approach the ex-mill becomes an urban lobby to speak about it’s history and keep offering people other types of products, recreation and an active social life translated into art and culture. That is also why I chose a new name for the ensemble, calling it “theMILL//grinding for the people since 1853”, because in the end this location will do exactly what it did years ago – serving the people in its proximity. If the steam engine represented the answer searched by so many scientists last century, nowadays this answer should be more complex.
