Loowatt
Loowatt is a startup founded by Virginia Gardiner that began as her final solo project from the Innovation Design Engineering course co-run by the Royal College Of Art and Imperial College. It is a system that generates electricity and fertiliser through the breakdown of human and organic waste. The toilet uses no water, and is therefore ideal for areas that either have poor infrastructures or where you wish to control what substances enter the public water system. There are applications in both developing and wealthy nations, but currently the focus is on setting up a network of toilet blocks and processing facilities in the poor suburbs of Madagascar's capital city.
