I'm a Brit, based in Hong Kong. Summary Combining technical knowledge with leadership is my primary strength. My style is energetic. Completely at home discussing a client’s needs, negotiating the internal corporate landscape or being hands on with my team. I take an approach that is both engaging and immersive for the customer; frequent feedback allows a strong sense of control of the project whilst freeing them of the burden of being too involved in the technicalities of the delivery. Having more than 20 years experience in the field, agile is the latest manifestation that encompasses the qualities of my approach to software delivery that evolved from my early days as a mainframe operator, through a career as a DBA and software engineer. My current interests are in development of DSLs to make complex systems, simpler and more accessible, especially with distributed teams and larger groups of less specialized development staff. My favourite programming language is Lisp, thus, I think Ruby is cool and I believe that not everything needs to be an object. Domain knowledge More than 20 years in the financial industry, I have worked on every aspect of banking and brokerage systems from the front to the back office. I worked on real time bond trading systems in the early 90’s when we had to design our own messaging protocols, right through to modern equity trading where utilization of industry standards such as FIX are now important. I have worked in Equities STP, Equity research, Equity derivatives, Interest rate derivatives, Credit Derivatives, Bonds and fixed income. Areas covered range from writing pricing spreadsheets through regulatory reporting, complex trade matching, trading, enormous research databases and financial accounting to name but a few. Technical skills (in rough order of skill level or most recent) Java, J2EE (Spring/Hibernate in particular), Alfresco/Lucene, Ruby, Groovy, XML, HTML, CSS, Javascript (server & client), VBA/Office, C/C++ (STL & Boost), Linux, Solaris, Windows, Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, Postresql, VAX VMS, VAX Basic, I’ve also worked on PIC microcontrollers and built some LCD device drivers for eCos and embedded linux. 8086 & 6502 Assembler.
