About Me
Having lived in five countries (India, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium) on three continents, I bring a world of experience to every piece I write or edit. Through my travels, I have developed a strong intellectual curiosity in many areas. I speak Spanish, French, Dutch, and German. A graduate of Muhlenberg College, I am one of the rare breed of individuals who majored history and anthropology simply out of my love for those subject areas. I went on to continue my studies at Rutgers University, where I earned a Master’s degree in classics and archaeology; I worked hard to finance both my education and four summers in England to participate in archaeological excavations. My love for history and world cultures certainly did not stop with my studies; on the contrary, it continues to this very day. My professional background is in publishing and education. During my 14-year career in publishing, I held progressively responsible positions, from proofreading and copy editing to Assistant and Associate Editor with publishing companies that produced medical, technical, and reference materials. It was a good career, but I thought it was time I seized on my long-time desire to go into teaching and become involved in educational issues and earned a Masters of Arts in Elementary School Teaching (and my K through 8 teaching license), with additional postgraduate coursework to obtain my Teacher of Students with Disabilities license. I have written about all these topics. At this point in my life and career, I am combining my love of writing and interest in teaching children by writing materials about important issues in pedagogy, along with nonfiction historical and biographical works for younger audiences. I currently produce an electronic newsletter and promotional materials for SCORE 15 (Service Corps Of Retired Executives). I am also in the process of developing a newsletter for the Janusz Korczak Association of the USA, to disseminate the teachings of Polish pediatrician, educator, and writer Janusz Korczak. I have already contributed a comprehensive bibliography of works on and by Dr. Korczak for a scholarly book, and I have a steady client for whom I have written academic reference articles for such publishers as SAGE and Ebsco. As time permits, I contribute book reviews to four major Web sites; so far, I have written more than 300 pieces; I also have a WordPress blog on issues affecting children\'s rights and education at dlberek.wordpress.com. I have many deep interests and love writing about them to share my insights.
