Siemens S5 to AB Controllogix Conversion

A network of 6 Omron PLCs and 2 Omron HMIs needed programming, along with integrating with an oven controlled by a Siemens S7 PLC and HMI. It was a machine that takes different ingredients of fibres, blends them, forms and bakes them into a flat insulation sheet, with a cutter/rollup at the end.

Programming and Commissioning of Insulation Machine

After my project of replacing HMI/SCADA systems, I had the task of upgrading the main data storage server. The existing software used for collecting the data and reporting was a proprietary Visual Basic application. I removed the function of “pulling” the data from the server and instead used the HMI/SCADA computers to “push” the data to the server. The Visual Basic application was replaced with Excel (with VBA) for reporting.

This allowed the client to request modifications to better fit their needs, making reporting faster and more efficient. MS Access was also changed over to MSSQL to improve reliability and sharing of data.

Database and Report System Upgrade (MS Access to MS SQL)

This project involved the upgrade of older, closed, proprietary operator interface and data acquisition systems to the more modern Siemens WinCC flexible software.

The older software running on 8 office-grade desktop computers running Windows XP used a combination of C, VB4, and Microsoft Access, with an additional Windows XP computer using MS Access as the central storage for historical data.

They were upgraded to industrial computers with Windows 7, with the software converted to VB Script within WinCC flexible, and Microsoft SQL Server for the storage of historical and recipe data both locally on each of the process computers, and a new central Data Server.

The result is that the client has more reliable hardware in the industrial computers, with software that can be modified as needed, with more reliable and robust data management.

The project is on-going because there are constant requests from the client to improve and customize their process, which they could not do prior to

Eaton PLC Project

Shawn was of great assistance in a project to help enable and upgrade a complex automatic laundry sortation system comprising Eaton PLC and SQL database that the vendor had abandoned. There was little technical information available but Shawn was able to work out the PLC system and become an integral part of our team. He is very skillful and very respected by the other team members. Project was successful, the system is now working well and our customer very happy. Highly recommend Shawn.
