AC Grid-interface Bidirectional Buck-Type Converters for DC microgrids: A Comparative Study

IECON 2022–48th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society
This paper discusses the power converter interface between the 400 V DC DC microgrid and the European threephase grid (400 V LL ). Therefore, power bidirectional step-down topologies are considered in this paper. Among the various topologies, three single-stage non-isolated topologies are compared in terms of semiconductor losses, magnetic component size and heat sink size. These topologies are the seven-switch buck converter, the SWISS converter and the Y-converter.

Artificial Neural Networks Approach for Reduced RMS Currents in Triple Active Bridge Converters

IECON 2022–48th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society
Many degrees of freedom are available for modulation, and exploiting them for optimal converter operation is challenging. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) approach that minimizes the rms ports currents of a triple active bridge (TAB) converter for the entire range of operation.

A Single-Sensor-Based Circulating Current Controller for a Modified Three-level MMC

2022 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC)
A voltage controller for the middle capacitor of a modified modular multilevel converter (MMC) is proposed in this paper. This controller is utilized as an alternative solution to the existing circulating current controller. Unlike the circulating current controller, the second-order harmonic component of the circulating current is regulated indirectly by controlling the second-order component of the middle capacitor voltage.

Comparison between Two-level and Three-level Based Multi-port Converter

IECON 2021–47th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society
In this paper, two-level and three-level modules for a three-phase multi-port converter (MPC) are evaluated and compared regarding the number of components and semiconductor losses. The MPC connects two medium-voltage ac (MVAC) microgrids to a common storage unit. The two-level MPC unit comprises a full-bridge converter for the ac-side and an isolated triple active bridge (TAB) dc-dc converter connecting the three ports.

Enhanced Level-Shifted Modulation for a Three-Phase Five-Level Modified Modular Multilevel Converter

IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics
The rapid growth of the penetration level of renewable energy sources (RESs) in low-voltage (LV) networks increases the research interest in more efficient, compact, reliable, and easily expandable energy conversion systems. The long commutation loops of the existing LV multilevel converters (MLCs), such as active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converters, lead to high-voltage overshoots induced during switching due to the significant parasitic inductance.

Three-phase modular multilevel converter with optimized capacitor sizing

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics
High capacitance requirement is a major concern of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) when applied to medium- or low-voltage systems. This article presents the design procedure and development of a modified MMC topology for low-voltage applications. With respect to the conventional MMC topologies, the proposed structure is designed and optimized to have a relatively low capacitance requirement.

Three-phase modular multilevel converter (MMC) for low-voltage applications: Improved modulation

2019 IEEE Conference on Power Electronics and Renewable Energy (CPERE)
Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has become one of the promising topologies in medium and high power applications. Modularity, scalability, and reliability are the main features that give the MMC some advantages over other multilevel topologies when considering high number of levels. This paper presents an alternative modulation technique for a modified modular multilevel converter (M-MMC) topology for low-voltage applications.

Capacitance requirements in three-phase MMCs for LV systems: Review

2019 21st European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'19 ECCE Europe)
This paper presents a review for different techniques of low frequency capacitor voltage ripple reduction for low voltage five-level Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs). This study is performed on two MMC topologies: a conventional MMC topology, and a modified reduced capacitance MMC topology. Two possible control techniques have been discussed and compared with numeric simulation results in terms of capacitor voltage ripple, inductor peak current, switch peak and rms current.

Improved single‐phase self‐synchronised synchronverter with enhanced dynamics

IET Power Electronics
Inertia‐less power converters are one of the main obstructions to increase the penetration level of distributed energy resources in the utility grid. The stability of the power system mainly depends on the system inertia. Virtual synchronous machine and synchronverter‐based grid‐tied inverters have been introduced as a solution to this problem.

A single-phase self-synchronized synchronverter with bounded droop characteristics

2018 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC)
In this paper, a modified single-phase self-synchronized synchronverter is proposed. The proposed controller retains all the merits of the original synchronverter, such as adding virtual inertia to the grid and providing the grid with frequency and voltage support without the need for a phase-locked loop (PLL). The fundamental idea behind this behavior is mimicking the synchronous machines.

Single-phase self-synchronized synchronverter with current-limiting capability

2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)
In this paper, a single-phase self-synchronized inverter with current limiting capability without a dedicated synchronization unit is presented. It offers an approach for power systems to control distributed renewable energy sources. The proposed system has the capability to synchronize itself with the utility grid before connection and track the grid frequency after connection without a phase-locked loop (PLL).

Single-Phase Virtual Synchronous Generator Without a Dedicated Synchronization Unit

International Telecommunications Energy Conference (INTELEC)
In this paper, a single-phase self-synchronized inverter that mimics synchronous generators (Synchronverter) without a dedicated synchronization unit is investigated. It offers a mechanism for power systems to control distributed renewable energy sources. It can synchronize itself with the grid before connection and track the grid frequency very well after connection without a phase-locked loop (PLL).
