Our windows server crashed this morning.
I need help finding what caused it, and then reversing it, if possible.
It is on a Dedicated Server Windows 2003 system. It was running slowly, so i tried to log in remotely to reboot it, and i couldn't log in. so, i logged in via the hosting company control panel and rebooted it there. it would not come back up after 20 minutes, so i tried restarting in windows rescue mode and it got stuck in a 'boot loop.' so, after waiting several hours, i had tech support mount the c and d drives so that i could access them via linux WinScp and am currently copying files down as a backup, in case...
we do not have a redundant back up system on this server, and Plesk is out of date and un-updatable on this version of Windows, and has a known security vulnerability, and i don't have a virus software on the server because nothing would work.
we have a new/upgraded website in development on a linux server, which is close to being finished, which is why i have not resolved the above weaknesses, hoping to lauch the new site and let this 2003 server rest in peace;)
This leaves me unsure why the Windows sever would crash today. The programmers have already copied the database over to the linux site and converted from MSSQL to MySQL, about 8 days ago.
so what happened today that caused the crash, and can it be un-done?
i have been able to connect via WinSCP and found a file called [login to view URL] on the d drive dated 9/12/12 at 3:05am, which is one of the latest changed files on there, aside from what seems like log files of tech support trying to get the server to reboot, but i'm not sure that's what they are.
there was also a file called Mount Point Manage Remote Database from 9/14/12 at 3:49pm but i do think that was tech support from the hosting company.
also on 9/14 at 10:33am the SysWOW64 folder was changed, if that means anything.
that was really around the time this all happened...
i need my site back up, and if it can't be done and the server has to be reimaged, then i need someone to restore all the data and reconfigure the server. ugghhh.
