So I would check, in this order: whether page caching or a CDN is in front of the post pages, which hook the custom code uses, and whether the value is read from cache after the write. Then move the increment to a small AJAX or REST call fired from the browser, which runs on every real view regardless of caching, and add a light guard so refreshes and bots do not inflate it. I work with WordPress and PHP regularly, and with Claude Code daily, so I am comfortable reading code generated that way. It usually works in isolation and breaks against the surrounding stack, which is exactly what this looks like.
