My Cisco ASA 5506 already runs a stable site-to-site VPN; I now want a second tunnel at the same location so I can keep working even if the main link drops. The backup circuit will be on a separate cable or fiber line, and the sole purpose of the new tunnel is business continuity. You will have full CLI and ASDM access plus the current running-config. I need you to build and test a fail-over solution that flips traffic to the secondary link automatically, then restores normal routing once the primary is back up. I’m open to whichever native ASA protocol stack you feel is best—IPSec, IKEv2, or another reliable option—as long as it integrates cleanly with the existing setup. Deliverables • Updated ASA configuration with secondary outside interface, tunnel, NAT and ACL entries • Route-tracking or SLA monitor code that triggers seamless switchover and fallback • Validation report showing packets flowing over the backup link during a forced outage • A concise change log and rollback plan Config must be clean, documented and ready for immediate deployment. Please include your timeline and any prerequisites so we can get started right away.

Hi, I can configure and test a redundant site-to-site VPN setup on your Cisco ASA 5506 using the existing primary tunnel plus a secondary ISP/tunnel for automatic failover. I’ll review the current running configuration first, then add the secondary outside interface, VPN/NAT/ACL entries, route tracking/IP SLA, and automatic failback to the primary circuit once service is restored. I can also perform a controlled outage test to verify traffic switches to the backup tunnel correctly. Deliverables will include the updated ASA configuration, validation results, change log, and rollback steps. Before starting, I would just need the current ASA config, ASA software version, addressing/details for both ISP circuits, and confirmation that the remote VPN peer can accept both primary and backup peer IPs. Estimated completion: 2–3 days, including testing and documentation. Best regards, Kashif

A second tunnel at the same site only earns its keep if it fails over cleanly when the primary peer goes down. Otherwise you've doubled your config without adding real redundancy. I'd build the standby tunnel with its own IKE and IPsec policies, leave your existing stable tunnel untouched, and verify failover by breaking the primary while traffic is live. I've done similar HA work on-premise for a maritime client where 99.9% uptime was the requirement and there was no room to break production. Full documentation of both tunnels and the failover behavior comes with the job. Does your ASA hold a public IP directly or sit behind NAT?

Hi, I’m Dev Singh, a Principal Network Engineer with 20+ years in Linux, networking and backend infrastructure. I have gone through your specific requirement for Cisco ASA VPN failover. I would use ASA IP SLA route tracking rather than depending on manual route changes, because the tracked primary path can be removed automatically when the link stops responding. I will work from the current running config and add the secondary outside path without disturbing the existing tunnel. I would keep NAT and ACL changes tied to that path, then force an outage to verify traffic actually moves and returns correctly. And I will document the exact rollback commands, at least that is where I would start. Relevant infrastructure details and screenshots I can send privately. What ASA 5506 software version and license are currently running? Does the secondary circuit provide a separate public IP and gateway? What remote peer and internal networks must remain reachable during failover? Free for a quick call this week? Or answer those three and I will map out the change. Dev Singh

Ensuring uninterrupted business continuity on your Cisco ASA 5506 requires automated SLA-driven route tracking, redundant crypto maps or VTI tunnels, and deterministic switchback logic. my approach: I will configure the secondary ISP interface, assign IP/NAT rules, and deploy a redundant site-to-site IPsec tunnel (matching your existing IKEv1/IKEv2 parameters). Using Cisco IP SLA monitoring with ICMP probes and tracked static default routes with floating metrics, the ASA will automatically sense primary circuit packet loss or downtime and immediately divert VPN traffic to the secondary line. Once the primary link stabilizes, SLA tracking will restore default routing without human intervention. I will provide a tested configuration script, step-by-step failover validation, and a clear rollback plan. 1. What device model and firmware version are running at the remote end of the tunnel? 2. Does the backup link have a static public IP assigned by the ISP? I am ready to review your running-config and secure your network redundancy.

Hello, Adam from New Jersey here. Thank you for the clear brief. I'd be glad to give your site reliable business continuity without disturbing the tunnel that already works. The thing that decides whether failover really works on an ASA is what happens to existing connections. Without "timeout floating-conn", sessions stay stuck to the dead route and users stay down even after the switch. I'll set that, together with SLA-monitor route tracking and a backup peer on the remote side, so traffic moves over within seconds and returns cleanly when the primary recovers. Here is how I'd approach it: 1. Review your running-config, back it up and plan the new interface, NAT and ACL entries. 2. Configure the second outside interface, IKEv2 crypto map, SLA monitor and tracked default routes. 3. Force an outage in a maintenance window, confirm packets flow over the backup link, then verify fallback. 4. Deliver the documented config, validation report, change log and rollback plan. Prerequisites: the backup line's static IP and gateway, access to update the remote peer, and an agreed maintenance window. The work can be completed within that window once the config is reviewed. I recently configured Cisco ASA site-to-site VPNs with route tracking for automatic ISP failover. I'd be happy to work closely with you until both links are fully tested. Thanks, Adam.

Adding a second tunnel is the easy part — the real risk is the switchover logic silently breaking your existing production tunnel, so the work has to be additive and fully reversible. I've spent years building recoverable execution flows and live monitoring dashboards for real-time platforms, where automatic failover and clean state restoration are exactly the problem being solved. Approach: (1) audit the running-config and map current NAT, ACL and crypto maps before touching anything; (2) stage the secondary outside interface, IKEv2 tunnel and floating static route with IP SLA/track objects, each line commented; (3) force an outage on the primary circuit, capture packet flow over the backup, then document restoration, change log and a one-command rollback. Is the backup circuit already provisioned with a static public IP?

Hi, I’ve configured Cisco ASA site-to-site IPSec/IKEv2 VPNs with dual-WAN failover, SLA tracking, NAT/ACL changes and controlled rollback. Your requirement is straightforward: make the backup tunnel genuinely automatic without disturbing the existing production tunnel. I’d first review the running-config and topology, then implement the secondary outside path, VPN, NAT/ACL rules and IP SLA/object tracking, followed by controlled outage testing and automatic restoration of the primary path. You’ll receive the updated configuration, validation results, change log and rollback procedure. Timeline: 2–3 business days / $800 fixed. Prerequisites: backup of current config, secondary WAN details, peer VPN parameters and a maintenance window for failover testing.
