Currently Using a 3D Scanner to scan staircases and import the 3D mesh files as .obj files into Solidworks and convert them into solid parts. I am looking for someone to create an API within solidworks that that can normalize, within a given range, the mesh of each vertical and horizontal step face creating a solid surface based on the average. Ideally a simple automatic solution basing each solid step face on the average of each polygon within a given range. Basically I am wanting to turn the mesh in image 1 into the solid part in image 2 with one action. I created image 2 by building over the mesh and this was extremely time consuming.

Having obtained 3D mesh scans of staircases in the form of .obj file types the problem is how to convert these into Solidworks .sldpt files quickly, and accurately.
The proposed solution, it is believed, should be the creation of a Solidworks ‘Add-in’ written in the native language ‘Visual Basic’. Ideally the process should be as follow;
• Scan a staircase using the Canvas scanner, taking a number of key measurements. Ideally the overall height combined with key width measurements so we can compare the model to the actual measurements.
• Email the scan (.obj file) to Bespoke Stairlifts.
• CAD operatives load the file into Solidworks and process using the API Add-in to create a Solidworks .sldpt Averaging out the uneven mesh polygons and combining to create a solid surface for each vertical and horizontal face of each step.
• Once the .sldpt is created this can be implemented into our current work flow.
The polygonal model created by the 3D scanner produces files in excess of 20,000 faces, Solidworks cannot function efficiently with files of this complexity so consideration should be made to reduce these at the earliest opportunity.
The model also needs to be scales by x1000 to produce a model accurately, enabling processed models to seamlessly integrate with our current workflow.
The planar face both horizontally and vertically should be determined by the median point within the mesh of each step face and a surface created at that point.
Ideally this will be a custom build Solidworks Add-in utilising the API programming function written in VBA.
We will potentially have an increased number of orders so we therefore need a solution that is as automated as possible.
