THE HIGH CONCEPT: Looking for a 3D animator to take 3D humanoid character models and create 3-6 animation 'moments' in a 3D environment. The whole scene (environment and models) already exists in UDK (pretty sure the assets were created in Maya and imported, fwiw) and I am fairly certain the models have already been rigged and are ready to animate. If it turns out they have not been prepped for animation, this work would become part of this project as well.
DETAILS ON THE ANIMATION MOMENTS:
* 3-6 of these moments.
* Each animation moment will consist of 10-30 seconds of unique animation. While I'm sure we'll need and want to loop/reuse things like run cycles within an animation moment (as well as share anims across multiple moments such as run cycles and shooting animations),the final output will be 3 to 6 10-30 second moments (i.e. not a 5 second run cycle looping 6 times/playing for 30 seconds).
* Most- if not all- of the moments would involve 2 or 3 of the humanoid characters. It's possible one of the moments would only involve a single character (guy shooting his shotgun while running, for example), but this would be the exception.
* Will need to animate/set up the cameras to capture each of the 3-6 animation moments in the most dramatic fashion (will provide rough storyboards to communicate the camera paths/direction but if you've got better ideas, would love to get your input/feedback).
THE ANIMATION STYLE (of the characters and the camera):
Brutal, violent, intense. The world and characters and art style are not violent at all and we want the animation style to be very violent and intense in order to provide a fun, exciting contrast to benign art style. Hyper violent and intense and almost gut churning is the goal of the animations (think of violence in films like American History X, Romper Stomper,etc). We want the edge to come from the brutal animation (and perhaps the camera work) and NOT from the blood/gore.
DELIVERY: I'm new to UDK so I'm not 100% sure if the first thing I'm asking for is doable. If it's not, then #2 is acceptable. Ideally, the deliverable would consist of the following:
#1- I would like to run the UDK database in real time and be able to set off the animations 1 at a time via a button press or mouse click (ideally you would be capable of setting up this logic). I would also like to be able to run all of the animation moments at the same time with no camera attachments, just the raw animations running in the level. This would allow me to fly the camera around and show off your animation moments.
#2- I'd like to- in real time- hit a key to set off a specific animation in UDK. This animation would attach the eye point to the animated camera for the more dramatic presentation of your animations.
THE PROJECT/ABOUT ME/ETC:
I've worked as a designer in the console video game business for over 15 years. I have recently left my company in order to raise funding for a new 3D action game I'd like a team to create in the browser space (all previous experience has been on the consoles). These animation moments will be part of the pitch I give to publishers and/or VC's to get funding.
I have a 3D environment built out and running in UDK. I also have some character models that I am fairly certain are already rigged and ready to animate.
TIMING: As tends to be the case with this sort of stuff, my deadline is asap. Final delivery sometime in the next 2-4 weeks. So the ideal candidate is someone who works fast and does great work (duh). But I also get that quality animation doesn't get done in a day. Actual delivery dates/milestones would be something we discuss during our first conversation. While I'm sure we'd both love to hit an animation home run off the first pitch, I'd plan for a little iteration time. Brutal, impacting animation is key to this project and it may take us a little time (but hopefully not too much time) to find the violent voice of the characters.
BUDGET: No real idea until we discuss.
