Plan: boot Rescue, assemble the array, activate the volume groups, mount root with /dev /proc /sys bound, chroot in, passwd, confirm a fresh hash in /etc/shadow, reboot, then verify SSH before we hand back. We won't touch your service config. Is root SSH login already enabled, or would you rather we go through a sudo user? We have done this on Hetzner and OVH rescue images, one on LUKS. What usually keeps people locked out after a reset is that sshd still has PermitRootLogin set to prohibit-password or password login switched off, so the new password works on the console but not over SSH. Fail2ban may also have banned your own IP after the failed tries, and on software RAID or LVM boxes the wrong partition gets mounted. I check all three so you get in on the first try. As Server Administrator at TyTeHosting I have run Linux hosts remotely since 2002 and have recovered dozens of locked-out root accounts through rescue systems, Hetzner included, with no reinstall and no lost data. At Assist A Boss I kept Apache and MySQL servers alive for over 60 client sites, so I know what must stay untouched.
