Individual Assignment Advisory Brief: One Claim, One Peer, One Recommendation At a glance Format: Individual written memo addressed to your company’s CFO Length: 1,800–2,200 words (excluding exhibits) Data sources: Public only — annual reports, sustainability reports, investor presentations, regulatory filings Companies: A company you word for or your group’s project company (primary) + one sector peer of your choice (comparator) Purpose The group assignment has asked you to analyse your company’s sustainability reporting and resource allocation practices as a team. This individual assignment asks you to go deeper on one specific point, compare it against how a sector peer handles the same issue, and then take a position. You will select a single sustainability claim made by the company of your choice and research it thoroughly using analytical tools from across the full course, and compare it with an equivalent claim from a peer company in the same sector. On the basis of that comparison, you will write an advisory brief recommending one concrete change to your company — grounded in what the comparison reveals. The brief is addressed to your company’s CFO. Your job is to be specific, evidence-based, and constructive. The peer comparison is not there to shame your company — it is there to sharpen your recommendation by showing that a different approach is feasible within the same sector context. The Assignment Select one sustainability claim from the company of your choice public communications. Diagnose the gap between what the company asserts and what the evidence supports. Compare it with how a sector peer handles the same type of claim. Then make one specific, justified recommendation for what your company should change — drawing on what the comparison reveals. Step 1 — Choose your claim and your peer Your primary claim is any specific public statement your company makes about its sustainability performance, commitments, or values. Examples: A certification or standard (“All our cotton is sustainably sourced”) A commitment about people or communities (“We pay a living wage across our supply chain”) A framing claim (“Sustainability is at the heart of our business model”) Choose a claim specific enough to interrogate with data. Avoid claims so vague that no evidence could confirm or deny them. Your chosen claim must be different from those your group analysed in the Group Assignment. Your peer comparator should be a listed company in the same sector as your primary company — facing broadly similar sustainability pressures, regulatory environment, and stakeholder expectations. You do not need to analyse the peer company in the same depth as your primary company. What matters is identifying how the peer handles the same type of claim and what that comparison reveals. The peer company does not need to be doing better than your primary company. A peer that handles the same claim less well is equally useful analytically, as long as the comparison is illuminating. Step 2 — Diagnose and compare Interrogate your primary claim across the dimensions below, focusing on at least three most relevant to your specific claim. For each dimension you address, note briefly how your peer company compares. Dimension Questions for your primary company Comparative question for your peer Materiality Is this issue genuinely material to the business model and stakeholders? Does the company’s own materiality assessment support the prominence of this claim? Does the peer treat the same issue as equally material? Is it more or less prominent in their reporting? Credibility Is the claim precise, time-bound, and verifiable? Does it meet the criteria for a credible sustainability statement covered in Days 1–3? How does the peer frame an equivalent claim? Is it more or less specific? More or less verifiable? Funding Does CapEx or OpEx data show real resources being committed to this claim? Does the money follow the words? Does the peer disclose investment directed at the same issue? Is the allocation comparable, higher, or lower? Measurement What KPIs track progress? Are they clearly defined, independently verified, and reported consistently over time? How does the peer measure and report on the same type of commitment? What can your company learn from the difference? Governance Is performance on this commitment linked to executive remuneration or board accountability? Who is responsible if the target is missed? How does the peer structure accountability for the same type of claim? Is governance tighter or looser? All evidence must come from publicly available sources. You are not expected to have access to internal management information of either company. Step 3 — Make your recommendation Based on your diagnosis and the peer comparison, make one specific recommendation to your company’s CFO. The recommendation must: Be grounded in the comparison — the peer’s approach should be visible in the logic of your recommendation, even if the peer is not named in the recommendation itself Address a genuine gap identified in your diagnosis — it must follow logically from your evidence Be specific enough to be actionable — not “improve transparency” but “disclose the methodology used to calculate Scope 3 emissions in the annual report, broken out by supplier tier” Be realistic within the sector context — the peer comparison is your evidence that the recommendation is feasible, not utopian Be justified — explain what this change would achieve and what the cost of inaction is Your recommendation may concern reporting practice, measurement design, resource allocation, or governance structure. It does not need to cover all of these. Suggested Structure The memo has no mandatory format, but the following structure works well and fits comfortably within the word limit: Introduction (150–200 words): name the claim and the peer comparator, explain why you chose them, and state your main conclusion upfront. Do not save your verdict for the end. The claim and its context (200–250 words): what exactly does your company say, where, and how prominently? What sector context makes this claim significant? Diagnosis and peer comparison (800–900 words): your analysis across the two or three most relevant dimensions. For each dimension, address your primary company first, then bring in the peer comparison. Be specific. Cite data from both companies’ own disclosures. Recommendation (300–400 words): one clear recommendation, fully justified, explicitly drawing on what the peer comparison reveals. Close with what you would expect to see change, and by when. Exhibits (not counted in word limit): any tables, extracts, or calculations supporting your analysis. What Good Looks Like ✓ Strong memos... Choose a claim specific enough that evidence can genuinely confirm or challenge it Use data from both companies’ own reports — not general impressions or third-party rankings Apply concepts from both halves of the course (reporting quality AND resource allocation/measurement) Use the peer comparison to sharpen the recommendation, not just as background colour Make a recommendation visibly grounded in the diagnosis and the comparison — the reader can see why it follows Write as an adviser, not as a critic — the tone is constructive and professional ✗ Weak memos... Choose a claim so vague that no data could ever test it Describe the claim at length without interrogating it Use the peer as decoration — mentioned but not integrated into the argument Make a recommendation disconnected from the diagnosis or the comparison Repeat the group assignment analysis rather than extending it Rely on general knowledge of the companies rather than specific disclosed data

Sustainability reporting analysis demands precision in claim interrogation and peer comparison—distinguishing between credible commitments and disclosure theatre requires systematic diagnostic work across materiality, measurement, funding, and governance dimensions. This assignment sits directly within core expertise: rigorous analysis of public disclosures, evidence-based comparative assessment, and translating findings into actionable recommendations grounded in data rather than assumption. The memo format is familiar territory—structured advisory writing that moves from diagnosis through comparison to a single, justified recommendation. Deliverables will draw on financial data from annual reports and sustainability disclosures, apply measurement frameworks covered in course content, and produce analysis that is specific, cited, and consultant-grade in tone. The peer comparison becomes the analytical lens that sharpens the recommendation—not decoration, but the evidence that change is feasible within sector constraints. Expect a memo that names the specific gap between what the company claims and what funding, KPIs, and governance structures actually support. The recommendation will be actionable and visibly grounded in what the peer company's approach reveals as possible.

Hi, I can surely assist you in researching, analyzing, and drafting a well-structured sustainability advisory brief that meets the assignment requirements. I have experience working with academic and business reports, conducting company and peer comparisons, evaluating sustainability claims, and creating evidence-based recommendations supported by public data. I will help identify a suitable company and peer, analyze the selected sustainability claim across relevant dimensions, and develop a clear, actionable recommendation addressed to the CFO. The final brief will be professional, properly structured, and aligned with the project guidelines. A couple of questions: 1. Have you already selected the company and sustainability claim, or would you like me to suggest suitable options? 2. What is the required word count and referencing style (APA, Harvard, MLA, etc.)? I look forward to discussing the project further. Thanks

Sustainability reporting claims often lack the evidentiary rigor needed to withstand stakeholder scrutiny — this assignment demands precise diagnosis of that gap and peer-benchmarked recommendations grounded in disclosed data. The memo requires applied analysis across materiality, credibility, funding, measurement, and governance dimensions. This sits squarely at the intersection of sustainability reporting standards, financial disclosure practices, and organizational accountability structures. The comparison against a peer company creates leverage to move from critique to actionable recommendation. Deliverable will include a structured advisory brief (1,800–2,200 words) with exhibits supporting the diagnosis. Research will draw exclusively from public filings — annual reports, sustainability disclosures, regulatory submissions, investor presentations. Analysis will apply frameworks from reporting integrity and resource allocation to isolate one specific, feasible, sector-realistic recommendation tied directly to what the peer comparison reveals. Timeline and revisions flexible. Turnitin plagiarism and AI reports included.

Your brief is well constructed, and the focus on materiality, credibility, funding, measurement, and governance demonstrates a robust sustainability analysis. You need someone with professional experience in sustainability reporting, not a summary of what the corporation claims. I have certificates in ESG Reporting, GHG Accounting and Corporate Sustainability. I have over 35 years of experience in infrastructure and project delivery in the GCC and South Asia, and I have developed ESG advisory content, environmental compliance documents according to USEPA, ISO and World Bank standards, and circular economy guidance for waste and environmental sectors. In the memo, I will establish the sustainability claim, position it inside the company’s public communications, evaluate it against the three most relevant dimensions using annual reports, disclosures, investor materials, and filings, and then utilize a peer comparator to sharpen the analysis. In conclusion, I will provide precise, well-reasoned, and practical CFO advice informed by the comparative and industry context. The memo will be 1,800–2,200 words, professionally constructed, advisory in tone, presented on schedule, and supported by correctly sourced public sources. Please give us the company, sustainability claim, preferred peer comparator, and deadline. I will check the approach and turnaround within 1 day.
