I need a detailed survey and report on differential movement between two abutting brick walls. The primary issue is separation gaps in the corner. The house is circa 1870 terraced london with 9" solid double brick. One wall (original) forms the side of an extension to the rear of the main house, and was given extra support in accordance with the surveyers recomendations some 10 years ago. The hot summers appear to have caused that wall to separate from the main rear wall of the house. We need a report and recommendation as to possible repairs. Requirements: - Professional surveyor experience - Expertise with brick structures - Provide comprehensive report with recommendations Ideal skills and experience: - Structural engineering background - Previous brick wall assessment projects - Strong analytical reporting skills

Hi there, We understand you are seeking clarity on the separation between the original rear wall and adjoining extension wall, including likely causes, implications and practical next steps. While we would not attend an onsite structural/building survey, we can work closely with you remotely using photographs, measurements, previous survey information and repair history. We would assess the available evidence, research relevant building context and plausible movement mechanisms, and prepare a structured advisory report covering observations, likely causes, evidence gaps and practical options for further investigation or repair consideration. Our work would be a desktop advisory assessment rather than a substitute for an onsite structural engineer or building surveyor where physical verification is required. Best Regards, 8veer

A 9-inch solid double brick wall from 1870 behaves very differently to modern construction. I'm London-based and work with a structural engineer experienced in period brick properties and differential movement assessment. He's dealt with exactly this kind of case before, where an extension wall and the original rear wall move independently and open up at the junction. How we'd approach this: 1. Review any existing surveyor reports and the recommendations made ten years ago 2. Inspect the separation gap at the corner and measure its current width and pattern 3. Check whether the movement is seasonal, progressive, or has stabilised since the last repair 4. Assess the extra support installed previously and whether it's still performing as intended 5. Consider likely causes, thermal expansion, ground movement, or foundation differential settlement 6. Examine both walls for any related cracking, bulging, or mortar deterioration nearby 7. Produce a clear written report explaining the cause and current structural condition 8. Recommend practical repair options, from monitoring through to remedial structural work Happy to arrange a site visit and confirm details whenever suits you. Hi there, Your 1870s London terrace with 9-inch solid double-brick walls requires careful assessment of differential movement, particularly at the separation between the original rear wall and extension. My structural engineering background includes evaluating existing structures, movement, cracking, support conditions, and repair requirements. I can assess the separation gaps, review the previous support works, identify likely movement mechanisms, and produce a clear technical report with practical repair recommendations. I’ll document findings systematically and distinguish observed evidence from conclusions. I’m ready to review the available photos, previous survey, and property details. Thanks, Elena
