For the past year, social media sites that include Facebook, Tumblr, and YouTube have been making it harder for queer users to interact with the sites. Twitter and Facebook have not only been censoring queer users reclaiming slurs they have also been enforcing a "real name" policy since 2015. This policy harms queer and trans users. YouTube has been putting the content of queer creators in restricted mode. As a result, the videos are not only un-viewable by the public, but the creators themselves also aren't able to make money from ad revenue. Tumblr had a similar issue last year when an update to the site's "safe mode" setting caused LGBTQ content to get blocked.
Polari is a unrivalled social media app available on all platforms with the intention of connecting the LGBTQI+ community and support each other in ways that are not yet available. The news feed section of the app allows the community to socialise and connect with each other without the fear of being harassed by trolls in their comments. The marketplace area allows users to shop from a wide range of community owned independent businesses giving them a chance to support each other. The maps news centre means users can stay informed about current news stories the moment they break. Finally, the forums sections allows people who are not part of the community to go on as ask questions, for example; if parents have kids that are transitioning and have questions they can go on anonymously and ask question to ensure they can be the best parent/ally/friend they can be to the community and gives users the chance to educate those outside of the community. Users of the app are able to set up their own profiles and upload a wide variety of content to their profiles which will be show in a news feed to all of their followers.
The app will generate money through a variety of income streams; the first being that when a purchase in made through the apps market place then 10% of the overall sale will be deducted before the money is sent to the shop owner, the news feed allows a central place to place paid advertisements from various companies who have to meet the requirements of a strict vetting process in order for the adverts to be approved.
