I’m building a small cross-language toolkit and need a compact Rust library, with Python bindings, that can interrogate a running browser process ([login to view URL], [login to view URL] or [login to view URL]) and give me three precise pieces of data: • URL of the currently active tab • Titles of every open tab in that same window • The active tab’s selected/unselected state (boolean flag) I do NOT need any information about inactive tabs beyond their titles, so you can ignore the well-known UI Automation hurdle of extracting hidden address-bar values. Focusing on the active tab should keep things lean and fast. Target environment – Windows 10/11 – Rust stable (latest) + Cargo – Python 3.10+ via a lightweight wrapper (pyo3/maturin is fine) Success criteria 1. A callable Rust function (and matching Python wrapper) that accepts a browser window handle or process ID and returns the three data points above. 2. Works reliably with Chrome, Edge and Firefox in their current public releases. 3. Sample Python script that prints the results for whichever browser window currently has focus. 4. Clear build instructions in a README. If you have prior experience poking the UI Automation tree or similar Windows APIs from Rust, this should be straightforward. I’m happy to test intermediate milestones and offer quick feedback so we can iterate rapidly.

Hi there, I have 6+ years of hands-on experience in Rust, Python integrations, Windows APIs, and desktop-level development. I can build the compact Rust library with Python bindings for Windows 10/11 and make it work with the current Chrome, Edge, and Firefox releases. I understand that the library needs to accept a browser window handle or process ID and return the URL of the currently active tab, titles of all tabs in that same window, and the active tab selected/unselected boolean state. I can focus specifically on the active tab for URL extraction while keeping inactive tab handling limited to their titles, as required. I also have experience working with Windows UI Automation and related Windows APIs, so I can structure this using Rust stable with Cargo and a lightweight PyO3/maturin wrapper. Let's connect to discuss and start the work. Thanks Saurabh

Hello! I can build this as a compact Rust + PyO3/maturin toolkit targeting Windows 10/11, with Chrome, Edge and Firefox support. I’ll implement HWND/PID-based detection, active-tab URL retrieval, all tab titles for the same window, and the requested boolean state without wasting effort on inactive-tab address-bar extraction. I’ll keep the native Rust layer clean and fast, expose a simple Python API, and provide a working focus-window demo. I’ll test against current browser builds, handle browser-specific UI/API differences, and document the complete Cargo + Python build process. I have solid Windows automation/browser-integration experience and can iterate quickly with your milestone testing.

Your UI Automation approach will fail the moment Chrome or Edge switches to a multi-process architecture where tab metadata lives in a separate renderer process. You'll end up with stale handles and null pointers that crash your Python wrapper under load. Quick questions - are you planning to poll this every second or hook it to a window-focus event? And do you need this to survive browser updates without recompiling the Rust binary? Here is the architectural approach: - RUST + PYO3: Build a safe FFI layer using windows-rs crate to query IUIAutomation COM interfaces, then expose via PyO3 with proper error propagation so Python never sees raw null pointers. - WINDOWS API: Use GetGUIThreadInfo to locate the active browser window, then walk the UIA tree with TreeScope_Descendants filter to extract URL bar and tab-strip elements without touching hidden tabs. - CROSS-BROWSER COMPATIBILITY: Implement pattern-matching logic for Chrome's Omnibox vs Firefox's urlbar accessibility roles, with fallback to window title parsing if UIA tree structure changes after browser updates. I've built similar Windows automation tooling in Rust for a fintech client monitoring 12 concurrent browser sessions without memory leaks. Let's schedule a 20-minute call to walk through the UIA tree structure for your specific browser versions before locking the API contract.

From what I've understood, you need a compact Rust library with a Python wrapper that can inspect a focused Chrome, Edge or Firefox window on Windows and return the active tab URL, all open tab titles, and the active-tab state. I can build the Rust/Python bridge around Windows UI Automation, keeping the implementation lightweight and focused on the exact three outputs rather than unnecessary browser data. The deliverable will include the callable Rust function, Python wrapper, focused-window sample script, browser validation and clear Cargo/Python build instructions. A few points to confirm: • Should the API accept either HWND or PID, with both supported? • Which browser should be validated first? • Do you already have a test machine with Chrome, Edge and Firefox installed? • Do you need prebuilt Python wheels or source/build instructions only? Please note: The budget and timeline in my bid are placeholders. If you can provide a sample target window/process, I can start by validating the UI Automation tree and the active-tab data path. Best Regards, Sagar

Hi there, I build Windows internals tooling in Rust — UI Automation, COM, PyO3 bindings — and ship it. Your spec: one Rust call on an HWND or PID returning the active tab's URL, all tab titles in that window, and the selected flag, exposed to Python 3.10+ via PyO3. Scoping URLs to the active tab is right — it skips the hidden address-bar path. Two points worth settling first: 1. Chrome/Edge expose their tab strip via UIA, but only once an assistive-tech client attaches — Chromium enables accessibility on demand, so the first call is slow. I handle it with a warm-up pass plus a cached property request. 2. Firefox in current public builds does not expose its tab strip via UIA the way Chromium does. Options: window title for the active tab plus the tab list from Firefox's automation endpoint (needs a debug port), or a title-only fallback (no URL). Which can you accept? This decides milestone 2. Plan (Rust stable, `windows` crate, no UIA wrapper): - M1 $90: UIA client for Chrome/Edge — tabstrip walk, SelectionItemPattern for the selected flag, CacheRequest to cut COM round trips, CLI sample. - M2 $70: Firefox path per your answer. - M3 $60: PyO3/maturin abi3-py310 wheel, active_tab_info(hwnd) returning a 3-field struct, script printing the focused browser window. Available now — answer point 2 and I open M1 today.

Hello, I can build your cross-language toolkit using a Rust library with Python bindings via PyO3 and Maturin. My approach involves leveraging Windows native APIs or browser debugging interfaces to interact with running processes like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. The library will query the active window to extract the active tab URL, selected state, and the titles of all open tabs in that window efficiently, packaged as a compact extension for Python 3.10+. 1) Do the target browsers run with remote debugging flags enabled, or should the library rely on OS-level process introspection and window handles? 2) What is your preferred build and distribution method for the Python package on Windows? Thanks, Bharat

Hi, I'd be glad to help build a compact Rust library with Python bindings to interrogate a running browser process and extract the URL of the currently active tab, titles of every open tab, and the active tab's selected state. To achieve this, I will utilize the Rust stable version and Cargo to create a lightweight library that interacts with the browser process using Windows APIs. I will then use pyo3 or maturin to create a Python wrapper, ensuring seamless integration with Python 3.10+. My approach involves using the Windows API to access the browser window handle or process ID, and then extracting the required information. I will also provide a sample Python script to demonstrate the functionality and clear build instructions in a README. I can cover: • A callable Rust function to extract the required data points • A matching Python wrapper using pyo3 or maturin • A sample Python script to print the results for the currently focused browser window • Clear build instructions in a README I work with clear progress updates and honest scoping. Please share your expectations for the project timeline and I can get started right away. Best regards, Gagan

Rust with PyO3 is a clean fit for a compact Windows browser-inspection library, but cross-browser reliability needs to be designed around each browser’s exposed UI Automation tree rather than assumed from one selector. I’d build a Rust core using Windows UI Automation/Win32 APIs, accepting an HWND or PID, locating the focused browser window, then enumerating its tab controls to return the active URL, all tab titles, and the selected state. The Python wrapper would expose the same structured result and include a focused-window example script. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox would have browser-specific element-discovery strategies with graceful diagnostics when a browser version or accessibility setting does not expose a required value. The project would include Cargo and maturin build paths, typed result structures, fixture-style tests where possible, and a README covering Python 3.10+ installation and Windows permissions. My Python systems work at Marin Software involved maintainable cross-service tooling and clear operational handover. Will the library run only for the signed-in desktop user, or must it inspect browser windows owned by other Windows sessions?

Hello, I can develop the Windows cross-language toolkit to expose the active tab URL, all open tab titles, and the active-tab state through a Rust library with a Python wrapper. I have 10+ years of software development experience with Python, C++, Windows-based development, APIs, automation, and system-level integrations. I can structure the Rust/Cargo library with a lightweight Python interface using PyO3/maturin, handle HWND/PID inputs, and provide a focused Python example plus clear build instructions. I would first validate the accessibility/UI Automation approach against current Chrome, Edge, and Firefox behavior, then implement and test the browser-specific handling rather than assuming identical automation trees. I don't want to claim prior specialized Rust browser-automation experience that I don't have, but I can approach this as a focused systems/API integration task. ₹12,500 fixed, 5–7 days.
