Snow - Erica Szalkowski
You must solve the murder of a fellow dormmate...
You have been exposed to a new medium, Twine Games. These games emphasize choice, possibility and free will. Your assignment, like most assignments, is to attempt to say something interesting about the text or texts you choose to write about. In this class, don’t neglect your personal experience when writing about media.
In order for an essay to be successful, you have to have an idea around which you will build your work. Sometimes coming up with an original idea, being able to see the finished project before you begin, can be quite difficult. Don’t worry about it too much. Even the word “essay” means “an attempt,” so your project is an attempt to get at some truth.
You should have already read the information on Thesis Statements and Intro/Conclusion (see the links for 6-15); these resources will set you on the right path.
Writing is a recursive process, that means we have to constantly be open to writing something, and then re-writing that same “something” when we can better articulate our ideas. Writing is discovery, so you won’t know everything you want to say until you make “an attempt” to say it.
You should schedule time every single day to work on your essays. These are not assignments you can complete the night before they are due. The writing process (sometimes) can be thought of as periods of production and periods of refinement. During production, your goal should be to produce writing with which you can work, and during refinement you should work to make your writing appeal to an audience.
Ultimately, you need to compose 1500-1750 “polished” words for this project. You should probably have around 9-10 paragraphs. Your work should be highly organized and also unpredictable. Our classroom discussions will revolve around this, so attending is essential to your success on this project. “Listing” structures are not an acceptable format.
You will need:
-An interesting title
-An opening hook
-A thesis statement
-Organized structure (Intro, body, conclusion, with ideas grouped together. Your
paragraphs should be reasonable sized but varied, etc.)
-Links between paragraphs (showing how your ideas connect to each other and to your
-Topic sentences within your paragraphs
-A multi-paragraph conclusion (at least 2 paragraphs)
-Multiple quotations from your primary source (at least 3)
-Good word frequency
-Good sentence structure variety
You should avoid:
-Listing things (first, second, thirdly, another thing...)
-plot summary that exceeds a very small paragraph or sentence or two
-repeating the same word or phrase over and over
-using the same sentence structure over and over
