I need assistance with completing 3D graphics render code for data plots written in C++. The code takes a list of 3D primitives, lines, spheres, text, etc, and displays these as 3D objects. The code works; it can display 3D primitive shapes correctly using orthographic projection or projective transform. But there are some remaining issues with the matrix math: 1. View volume is calculated to enclose the view space plus 50%, but when translated to NDC using a scale+translate matrix, some Z vertices are outside the [-1, 1] NDC clip region. Objects inside the view volume in view space should map to inside NDC space after viewspace to NDC matrix transform. 2. Rotating the camera, strafing left/right, in/out do not work correctly. Also I need a zoom control to shrink the view volume around a region of interest. I need smooth intuitive mouse controls for navigating 3D space. 3. Algorithm for scaling objects (text, sphere) for depth needs improvement. Want some combination of size and color saturation to indicate relative object distance. I am looking for someone with experience with linear algebra for gaming or 3D visualization to help with the math for my 3D graphics renderer.

Your issue with Z outside NDC after a correct view volume suggests the view-space-to-NDC matrix is not actually being built from the same near/far bounds used to calculate the volume, or the Z range is being consumed by a perspective divide when it shouldn't be. I’ll treat it as a single affine mapping, verify all eight view-volume corners land inside [-1,1]^3, and adjust the matrix construction so the mapping is exact. For camera controls, I’ll rebuild movement around the camera’s actual right/forward/up vectors instead of world axes, separate yaw and pitch accumulation, and implement zoom by shrinking the view volume around the target point so it feels like a lens, not a scale on the final transform. For depth rendering, I’ll use a normalized distance-based function that scales text and spheres smoothly and blends color saturation with distance, with a stable near reference to avoid popping. One hidden issue is that text and sphere scaling may be using the same projection matrix as geometry, which causes them to scale nonlinearly; I’ll handle them as view-aligned elements with their own depth factor.

Your renderer is already displaying the primitives, so the real task is to fix the underlying camera/projection mathematics rather than rewrite the renderer. That’s a good fit for a focused linear-algebra/3D graphics pass. I can help diagnose and correct: View-space → NDC transformation and Z clipping, including projection/view-volume calculations Orthographic and perspective/projective transforms Camera rotation, strafing, dolly in/out and intuitive mouse navigation Zooming around a selected region of interest Consistent camera coordinate systems and transformation order Depth-based scaling of spheres/text and other primitives Distance-based visual cues such as size and colour saturation Smooth, predictable interaction suitable for a 3D plotting/visualization tool I’ll work from the existing C++ code, identify where the matrix conventions or coordinate transformations are going wrong, and make the smallest clean changes necessary rather than introducing unnecessary complexity. I can also explain the corrected math and transformation pipeline so you’re not left with a black-box fix. If you send the relevant camera, projection, matrix and rendering code, along with the current NDC/view-volume calculations, I can review the problem areas and get straight into debugging. THIS IS A GREAT MATCH. I have just handled a 3D rendering project that involved complex transformations and camera controls in C++. You need to ensure that your 3D objects map correctly to the NDC space and improve the camera navigation experience. Let's tackle the view volume calculations and refine the zoom control to enhance the user interface. Also, scaling objects based on distance will add depth perception, making your visuals pop. The focus will be on clarity and precision, so you can trust the math behind your graphics. MESSAGE ME, I WILL KEEP THIS SIMPLE. Regards, Stefan.

The main issue here is the matrix math affecting the NDC transformation. If Z vertices are mapping outside the [-1, 1] range, it could lead to rendering artifacts or lost objects. This not only frustrates users but could also lead to misinterpretations in data visualization. I'd start by reviewing the scaling and translation matrix for the NDC transform, ensuring it accurately reflects the view volume. Fine-tuning that math is key, as it directly impacts how objects are rendered in 3D space. For intuitive mouse controls, I’d implement a straightforward mapping of mouse movements to camera rotations and translations, which will enhance user experience. I've tackled similar 3D rendering challenges before, often revising algorithms to improve clarity and functionality. How are you currently handling mouse input? Also, what platform are you targeting for this renderer?

Your project requires precise handling of matrix mathematics to ensure that 3D objects are rendered accurately in the normalized device coordinate (NDC) space. The issues you've outlined—particularly the Z vertices mapping outside the NDC clip region—highlight a need for fine-tuning the view volume calculations and transformations. By methodically adjusting the scaling and translation matrix, we can ensure that all objects within the designated view space correctly translate to the NDC. Addressing the camera controls will enhance user experience significantly. Implementing smooth and intuitive mouse controls for strafing and zooming will facilitate easier navigation through 3D space, allowing users to focus on the data being visualized rather than the mechanics of movement. For the scaling algorithm, a thoughtful approach that combines size adjustments with color saturation will visually communicate depth effectively, making it easier for users to grasp the spatial relationships between objects. With a strong background in linear algebra applied to 3D visualization, I can help resolve these mathematical challenges and elevate your renderer’s functionality, ensuring a seamless experience for your users. Let's create something that not only meets your expectations but sets a new standard for quality. Regards Junaid

HI, Are you looking for someone with strong linear algebra and 3D graphics experience to fix the matrix math and camera controls in your C++ renderer? I can debug the view-space → NDC transformation, orthographic/projective projection, camera rotations/translations, and depth-based object scaling while preserving your existing rendering pipeline. I can specifically address the NDC clipping issue so objects inside the calculated view volume correctly map into the expected [-1, 1] range, then implement intuitive camera orbit/strafe/dolly/zoom controls with smooth mouse interaction. I can also improve the depth-based scaling and visual treatment of text/spheres using a sensible combination of apparent size and color saturation.

Consider this, ✍️ The key here is ensuring that your 3D renderer accurately maps objects from view space to normalized device coordinates (NDC) while providing intuitive navigation controls. You mentioned the need for refining the view volume and camera controls. What usually matters most here is achieving precision in the matrix math to ensure objects remain within the NDC range. A common issue is miscalculating the transformation matrices, which can lead to objects being clipped or improperly displayed. I would approach this by carefully reviewing your current matrix calculations, ensuring they align with the expected transformations for both the view volume and NDC conversion. Additionally, I can implement a robust camera control system that allows for smooth movement and zooming around a specified region of interest. With experience in linear algebra for 3D visualization and a reputation for 5-star communication and quick responses, I’m confident in addressing these challenges effectively. How does your current setup for handling transformations look? Best, Kurt
