I am looking to create a fake terminal of sorts that can be resized and scaled to fit any screen resolution so that the text game and its ASCII art are not distorted and ruined when resized or played on different machines. The game must be able to have colored text characters. Animations are desirable but not required. It must also be cross-platform from Windows to MacOS and Linux. Whatever library or method is taken to achieve the goal is less relevant, but I was tossing around the ideas of Pygame, asciimatics, tkinter, etc. and assigning the text characters to some sort of tile based system but I'm not entirely sure which way is the best to go.
The game framework will be similar to that of a MUD and/or Zork. It will require the functions of being able to have rooms (locations), players, room descriptions, objects, etc.
The multiplayer framework must be able to communicate when 2 or more players are in the same room and when players move around in the room-based world. It must be able to communicate where objects are at any given time and communicate simple attributes such as health, weapon ids, armor ids, a player's money, etc.. And lastly players must be able to send messages to one another and interact with one another (i.e. fight, exchange items, etc.).
I am not asking for the implementation of such functionality, more so just the groundwork to be able to communicate said information from client to client.
I was imagining the server itself being similar to that of a command prompt. A simple log of things occurring within the game world (i.e. players money increased by 100, money decreased, player lost health, player died, player joined, etc.). I would like a framework to be able to execute certain events through the command line (i.e. give player x money, kill player, kick player, ban player, etc.) I was imagining several hundred or at least ~100 clients being simultaneously connected to the server, similar to a MUD.
Once again, I am not seeking the implementation of such commands, rather just a cornerstone from which to build off of and implement further commands and functions myself.
Above all the code needs to be properly documented so that I can understand it as I use and learn it to build the game.
