I believe the following steps are essential:
1. Some designer has conceived the design from turbine performance requirements. This should decide
the dimensions, including spacing between different arms etc from Aerodynamic interference points etc.
So need a schematic diagram of the layout from Turbine design and performance point of view.
This data should also contain preliminary drawing of Turbine, various component weights etc.
2. We need a preliminary loads based on which a SoM analysis is carried out.
The loads would include: Various dead weights; air loads at the base of the attachment of Turbine to
cantilever mountings (Three loads and moments). we will not be interested in blade loads etc. we are
interested in the loads applied by the turbines on to the supporting structure. we may need to consider
different turbine operation sequences and which combination gives peak loads on the support structure (both
at the end of each cantilever and at the base foundation). This may end up more than one load case.
3. A preliminary sizing of tower and the initial SoM calculation to validate the same. They can propose the
dimensions of tower, taper ratio based on SoM calculations.
4. Preliminary drawings from this design to consider for FEA modeling.
5. Then we need detailed loads and their combination to analyse the support structure.
6. We need to do the following FEA:
a. Static analysis for various load cases
b. Modal analysis primarily to check any resonance with turbine rotations speeds;
any natural frequency of tower should not be a multiple of turbine rotation frequency
c Buckling analysis
d. Design optimization may not be required; What is there to optimize? Thickness of tower?
It depends if there are serious weight constraints. we can target lower stresses to avid any fatigue issues.
The foundation or fixing bolts and support structure should be safe from fatigue loads. It does
not appear to be an issue.
If they need a quote it should be clear on what aspects they need.
