Speed Up 3 x Wordpress sites.

I have had this done before and the results from the speed test were impressive however over the months, the speed has reduced significantly despite having little changes to the sites.
I felt the Freelancer didn't perform at their best and did only a few things that initially sped up the sites but it wasn't long term solution.
I need to decrease the number of 'requests'. Page loading page times need improving.
Need image optimization also (without losing quality) I need to identify unnecessary slow plugins plus I would welcome other suggestions.
I have used Autooptimize, but my images don't show on Chrome browsers as a result. I switched it off.
I have used Cloudflare also, but got hacked on the Free version so don't that and don't want the paid version.
Can you please provide me with a brief on how you can maximise my speed of three sites.
