Displaying data on a map using mapserver

I have a database of two tables

1- buildings

2- energy

Buildings table has the_geom column that will be used to display data on the map.

I want to perform sql queries and display results using openlayers

Also I want to click on specific point on the map and display some general data of that building.

Example of queries:

Display building on a specific zipcode area

Allow user to input building id, energy type and bill period then display the allocated consumption according to that from the energy table ..

I have already started the project and I was able to display the buildings on the map but I need help on performing some queries and applying the click_event on the map using wms&wfs for example

this is a small homework project I need it as soon as possible
