Wordpress optimization

We have a pretty newly opened sports news webpage build with Wordpress and using a ittle bit customated theme "Playmaker6". We experienced today several crushes caused by too many visitors trying to visit our page at the same time.
We contacted our webprovider (Bluehost) and they told us that "It appears that you have multiple processes currently running." and "I would have your developer look at the process that you have running and also your log files."
Now we would need someone to optimize our webpage as it seems that already a couple of thousand visitors makes it crush.
