Research/Recommend Affiliate Program Software

Help me find the right affiliate program software from among the hundreds that are available. It will be rather helpful if you are already involved in Internet marketing in some fashion, so that you're already familiar with the concepts and terminology. I'm happy to define one or two terms if they are unfamiliar to you, but if little or none of this makes sense to you, then you really shouldn't even bid.

**Update #2:** I've rearranged and significantly clarified this project.

Here are the things that I think are important. If you feel I've missed some important feature, please feel free to mention it. I'd like you to please assemble a "short list", say, five or less choices, with your comments on the pros and cons of each.

The more I consider this project, the more clear that it becomes that the _primary concern will be how easy is it to modify the software to meet our own specific needs._ Thus, I am *strongly* leaning towards open source software, not (just) because it is free, but rather because people are *expected* to make modifications, and that the database structure is more likely to be transparent enough for future developers to make necessary modifications. Obviously, if something already exists which is robust enough to already include most of these items, so much the better!

I have intentionally ordered this table in terms of which important features I am guessing are *not* commonly available. e.g., Having a two-tier program is critical, but it's also very common, and thus it appears near the table's bottom. The idea here is to try to get software which at least *already* satisfies needs which would be difficult to add to an existing package. I've also tried to not consider too many non-critical features, so we don't run into "feature creep". (Importance "0" may safely be ignored; I just retained those for other people/projects.)

## Deliverables

| | (1 = low; 5 = high) |

| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Feature | Importance in existing packages | Ease of

Customization |

| **Least likely to be available in existing packages** |

| Affiliate Campaigns = “sub-id's??: Affiliates have the ability to define their own subordinate campaign names (e.g., 20 letters/numbers/underscore; no space or special char's.) *without configuration*, (i.e., on the fly), and this tracks all through impressions, click-throughs, conversions, etc. | 4 | 1 |

| Ability to store other affiliate identifiers (e.g., LeadFactory aff. prog. id.) to integrate them | 2 | 4 |

| If not available, we'll need to add this: record created as soon as email is entered (into the name squeeze page), so referring affiliate is retained when full data entered later. i.e., An early affiliate record will be mostly empty, with a status of "pending" or something, but is still stored with the second-tier affiliate who referred them. | 1 | 5 |

| Display affiliate code immediately, not just in email | 1 | 5 |

| Buyers automatically become affiliates | | 3 |

| **Available in some existing packages** |

| Affiliate numbers (instead of or in addition to textual affiliate identifiers) available | 4 | 2 |

| Affiliates must confirm an email before reaching a "confirmed" state. | 3 | 4 |

| Optional CAPTCHA in the application process. | 3 | 4 |

| Optional automatic country determination (via GeoIP, etc.) | 3 | 4 |

| Ability to pay affiliates with different payment systems, e.g., checks, PayPal, e-gold, etc. | 3 | 3 |

| Pay different amounts for different events (products), i.e., not just a flat X% across the board. Different commission levels per product, per affiliate: Ideally, can change those default amounts for specific affiliates. i.e., Most people get $A for event a and $B for event b, but this affiliate is special, and gets $C for a and $D for b. | 3 | 3 |

| URL's without question marks for affiliate identifiers (e.g., [url removed, login to view] ) | 2 | 5 |

| Allow https: and encrypt SSN/EIN, etc., but don't require https: for all affiliate contact data fields. | 2 | 3 |

| Independent access to the auto-counter for unique affiliate identifier numbers. Separate table which records referral URL, IP, date/time, parent affiliate id, etc., of all inbound visitors to name squeeze page. | 2 | 4 |

| Robust reports, many reports, reports which are able to handle many (e.g., 100k) affiliates, reports covering just top N affiliates, robust search, reports on conversions: click-to-lead (via name squeeze), lead-to-confirmed member, etc., repeat sales, recurring sales, back-end sales. | 1 | 3 |

| Recurring billing and commissions | | 3 |

| PayPal / e-gold integration | | 3 |

| **Most likely to be available in existing packages** |

| Hosted entirely on our server(s), i.e., not a third-party network. | 5 | |

| Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP | 5 | |

| Two-tiered; this is critical. i.e., Second-tier affiliates get a percentage of whatever the first-tier affiliates (which they referred) earn. | 5 | |

| Tracking using at least cookies, ideally combined with query-string tokens and/or unique URL's. | 5 | 3 |

| Extranet for affiliates, intranet for administrator, both showing reports appropriate for the respective viewer. | 5 | 2 |

| Customizable is important, as we'll be integrating this with a different website, and want to track/pay based on events occuring there. | 5 | |

| Anti-fraud features are appreciated. | 4 | 2 |

| Popular. Yeah, I'm a lemming; I wanna go where all the cool kids go. :-) More to the point, if a lot of people already use something, it's more likely to be the right answer, and also easier to find support (say, on RentACoder). | 4 | |

| Ideally "first cookie wins" (compared to last one winning) in cases where two affiliates both referred a visitor. | 3 | 4 |

| $50 or less; open source (free) is ok, too. | 3 | |

| Does *not* need to integrate with shopping cart, as we don't anticipate paying percentage of sale. | | 1 |

| Easy export/import | | 4 |

Two good choices, (to gather a list of feature sets), but more expensive than necessary:

**Update:** I will be traveling this weekend, so if we don't finish things early Saturday, we'll have to pick this back up on Monday.

I'm pretty flexible and easy to work with. I tried to make sure that this job is as completely specified as humanly possible.

If you have **any** questions, *please* ask them! I have found that it is far better to risk a bit of embarrassment than to spend time working on an assumption which later proves to be wrong. Do not worry that a question may seem silly; just *let me know* and I will be very happy to answer you!
