Here are our guidelines for cover photography. Please share this with the photographers, along with a copy of a previous issue so they can see how our covers look.
The photo should be taken portrait style. See past covers to get an idea of the area, and how headlines will be inserted.
Proper photo format:
Send digital photos as TIF or JPEG files, at least 300 dpi and 8x11˝ in size. Either RGB or CMYK are OK.
Magazine logo and shipping label:
Leave excess room above head of subject(s) to allow for IPG logo, headlines and other text. (See recent covers.) Also we have to place a label on the lower right corner of the cover, so nothing important can go there.
Lighting should be flattering to subject, and skin tone should look natural. Avoid dark, moody lighting because our colors tend to go very dark when printed. Also avoid harsh flash photography. More than one light source is better.
Free of excess clutter:
Avoid showing wires, wastebaskets, trees, unrelated posters or signs, or things appearing to grow out of subject’s head. (Clean up the work area as much as possible.) If outdoors, be mindful of objects/people in the background. (If including a sign in the shot, it should be very close to subjects, not high overhead.)
Natural pose and facial expression:
Please make sure the subjects’ poses are natural and comfortable, and not all doing the same thing. (We don’t want 2-3 people in a row with hands clasped in front of them.) Have them doing different things with their arms, but not looking too stiff. Perhaps one leaning, one holding something, one sitting, etc. Please make sure no one is dressed sloppy. Nice shirts for everyone is a requirement. (Business attire.) And if there are 4-5 people in the shot, put them in 2 rows, not all in a line.
For the cover shot, limit the number of people in the photo to 2-5 so it doesn't look crowded.
If you are able to send low-res jpegs in an e-mail so I can select the best ones, that would work well. Then you could only send the one or two high-res shots we need. Otherwise, e-mail large photos one or two at a time. I can also send our FTP site info if needed.
