sudo service mysql stop sudo service mysql start The reason is the init script runs mysql_safe which restarts mysql automatically (in my case anyways). Using kill or init.d to stop/start doesn't work. The error means the socket in /var/lib/mysql is not present. You can check in that directory for the pid file.
