We are looking for a professional who is capable of helping us to customize an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS installation. We are German company and part of our portfolio is a packet capturing solution. We do have a software running on this said Ubuntu version, this Ubuntu image is provided to us from a third party company.
For better understanding, the above mentioned Ubuntu system will be now called just “linux system”.
As already mentioned, the linux system is an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. It is installed via USB with a customized installed from the manufacturer. It installs the base system as well as the software part from the manufacturer. One of the key features is, that after installation, the system operates like a Live CD, meaning though it does not boot from an ISO or USB/CD, every changes made to the system won’t survive a reboot, the whole system reverts back to it’s previous state. Only a few folders are kept persistent while everything else is non-persistent. Meaning an application/package being installed today will be gone again after a reboot. One of the reason is that additional software installed by customers could impact the overall software performance.
Though it is possible to add the PERSIST option to the menu entry in GRUB to allow all changes being persistent, it is not officially being supported by the manufacturer. The linux system is installed on portable PCs with integrated display and keyboard/mouse and our goal is to have an X-Window system installed after the linux system has been installed by the installer provided by the manufacturer.
We need a professional who is capable of either adjusting the base image with the installer (which is used to stage the whole system) and integrate a X-Window system into it or to remove the restrictions mentioned above temporarily, install the X-Window system along with a browser and then putting the system back into it’s original state where all changes are being non-persistant again. It is also required to provide a documentation to track what has been done as well as a knowledge transfer to our colleague so that he will be able to reproduce the steps one did and to make future changes to the system on our own. If the professional can also document and provide knowledge transfer on how to make changes to the image which comes with the installer it would be a huge plus.
We have basic knowledge of linux administration. We do not know how exactly the above mentioned situation has been achieved by the manufacturer and part of our agreement with them is that we are on our own when it comes to changes or adaptions. To provide a better idea on how the system is build up you can find attached some basic information about the filesystems, that should give you an initial idea on what you can expect. If additional information are required, please do not hesitate to contact us!
