I understand exactly, your problem with the banner. Already sketching my thoughts. You need modern, minimalistic and direct yet, with an appealing and descriptive element. Have you given thought to the remainder of the site and how a new banner will integrate with the rest. I think there is much to do but this is an excellent start. I see no reason not to include myself in this project. FYI your example links seem to be broken.
