Instruction Manual Design
The job is to design the layout and content for all printed pages of an “Instructions For Use” (IFU) booklet. This is the same thing as a User Manual. Subject matter is to be created by us. The overall physical design has been determined for the booklet. The booklet will be bound by plastic coil.
At this time the content does not exist and will be created in concert with the successful bidder. There will be pages with tables, pages with paragraph format text and pages with free form text around illustrations or photographs. We wish for each content page to have a consistent and professional appearance and uniform “look”.
There are (2) white covers, (8) light blue dividers and (20) white content pages. All will be printed on both sides. The front cover will be 300GSM white gloss cover, the dividers will be 200 GSM light blue gloss and the content pages will be ~100GSM white opaque offset. The front cover will be printed in color and all other pages will be black ink (black or grays) on white or light blue paper. The overall size is 5.25” x 5.25” not including the coil. Adding the coil the size is 5.25” x 5.50”. Adobe Illustrator files will be provided for the cover, dividers and content pages for the purpose of understanding the page size and constraints (such as tabs.) The Illustrator files can be used as beginning templates. See the attached PDF for images of the intended design and photos of a mock-up of the design.
The IFU will be included with the main product. It is expected to print in quantities higher than 1000 copies and the printing and binding cost is currently budgeted to be $.22 to $.27 each, printed and bound. This information is included to differentiate between an informational piece such as our IFU and a glossy perfume or jewelry brochure.
We are looking for professional page layout and management of the creation of the pages including collaboration with our subject matter experts as well as content provided by third party illustrators and photographers. There will be no management requirements other than managing your own work in accordance with the project. Important note – please include the code 1119 to indicate you have read the details of this job posting and are not a “spray and pray” freelance bidder.
You will not be required to interface or manage the work of the illustrator or photographer. That will be managed by us. We have worked with freelancers in the past in many skill ranges from page design and layout, proofreading, translation services, CAD design and modeling and a few other peripheral skill sets. We understand the ebb and flow of freelance work and we are an attentive task manager. We seek serious and professional freelancers. We do not seek large companies trying to secure work for their design staffs. In our experience these collaborations fail due to personnel changes at the freelancer side of things forcing re-introductions of the project to the “new” person, so if you are a larger firm with several staff persons please do us both a favor and don’t bid.
We wish for the pages to be created in Adobe In Design. It is our understanding that this is the preferred method for creating and laying out multiple page projects that may have changing content. It is also our “big picture strategy” to make several versions of the IFU in the future (language and special OEM versions) and we would like to make the changes in one place and have the changes populate through the subsequent versions. If you do not know In Design and all of its capabilities and features please do not bid on this project as there will be an In Design competency review prior to awarding the bid.
