Require 20 fiction and 40 non-fiction passages to be written. These passages should be written to a US grade 5-6 readin level (short non-compound sentences and no complex words). More work will be requested should quality work be submitted. See below an example of the passages:
Fiction (Mostly very original short stories. But also include a handful of original poems, diary entries, adapted fables)
Example 1: Every morning that Patrick woke up he would throw up his arms, let out a yawn and jump out of bed, “Up and at ‘em” he’d always bellow. Patrick had his breakfast then got dressed in his overalls. He would stroll out to his garden to tend to his vibrant flowers and gourmet vegetable patch. Every afternoon he would bring in new flowers for his wife and some fresh vegetables for dinner. “It’s the little things.” Patrick would say.
Non-fiction (Mostly informational articles. But also include a handful of short biographies, how-to's, editorials)
Example 2: The process of turning light energy into chemical energy is called Photosynthesis. One of the best examples of the process of photosynthesis is how plant leaves turn sunlight into oxygen by recycling water and carbon dioxide. One of the reasons plant leaves are photosynthetic is due to the high amount of a green pigment named chlorophyll contained in them.
Example 3: Alexander the Great is one of the most influential kings of all time. He was king of Macedon in north-eastern Greece in 336 B.C. By the age of 30, Alexander the Great had created one of the largest empires in ancient history. He was responsible for the fall of the Persian king Darius III among many other grand accomplishments. The tactical exploits of Alexander are still taught throughout the world in military academies today.
