Criminal cases legal database
We are a law firm operating in Spain, in various places, mainly in criminal cases, with 90% of our clients contacting us from prison.
We work via several colleagues, or handle the files ourselves, depending on what is necessary.
What we need is a database, either web based or mac based (filemaker comes to mind) which allows us to concentrate and handle the cases. Normally we assign each case a number (not per client, as some have various case numbers)
'clients' who can have one case or more cases pending, and some cases already solved.
they usually reside in a prison, but can be changed from one prison to another.
they also have friends outside, or family, with the phone number and (not often) full address
A client may have several cases, some of which are finished, and he may have not only court cases, but also civil law cases (inheritance, divorce) and problems at the Prison service. He may also be a possible target for us to claim under the Human Rights Conventions (two of which are applicable, with maybe a dozen articles of interest).
lawyers working for us, with their full contact data. Here also, at some time, some change may come.
the lawyers visit the clients, visits the courts and (till date) sent us emails with the updates per case
then you have the courts with their full contact details (phone, fax, email, address etc.) and a note of the person actually handling the file
There are dates that are fixed (court hearings etc.) for some lawyers, and also 'remember in 7 days' systems per file so we can follow up.
Lists per lawyer, lists per date, lists per month: you get it approximately. Loads of notebooks lying around at the moment.
ideally, lawyers should be able to update (NOT to change previously incorporated data) files, and family (upto a certain level) should be able to view on internet what is happening to their file.
Also, we will have to update files as and when they happen.
I generally speaking is (quite) a bit more complicated than that, but that is the general idea. Also, there should be a choice of languages: english and spanish (we can provide the translations)
If you feel you have an idea on how to do this (we' re lawyers, not programmers), feel free to get in touch with us. We use mostly mac, so you can imagine we are NOT very computer wise. I personally have a VERY basic idea of filemaker.
