Detection of historical invasion of native woodlands by hybrid hollies in Northwestern Europe. Holly measurement from open-access pictures of herbarium specimens. Plant invasions can induce significant changes to ecosystems. However, in many cases these changes are difficult to measure and in many case invasion are also difficult to detect. This is the case of ornamental hybrid hollies (Ilex aquifolium × perado = I. × altaclerensis) that have been planted since Victorian times across Western Europe and that are reported to replace native holly (Ilex aquifolium) trees in some woodlands. Unfortunately, the extent of hybrid holly invasion has never been fully assessed. This project is an opportunity to explore the possibility of identifying hybrid holly invasion using existing imagery of herbarium specimens. Leaves will be measured and various characters recorded from these specimens in order to assess whether the morphology of the specimens is increasingly resembling over time the characteristics of the hybrids. It is anticipated that the results will confirm the cryptic invasion of hybrid holly as reflected in the herbarium collection. The findings will help narrow down future research into cryptic invasions of this tree in natural ecosystems in Europe. Why This Matters If the measurements show that specimens labeled as "native" have actually been getting larger and less spiny (traits of the hybrid) over time, it proves a historical shift that was previously unrecorded. This helps scientists understand how ornamental gardening has permanently altered the genetics of European woodlands.
