Assignment 1

• Solutions to assignments must be computer generated and printed hard copies.

• Similarity or plagiarism across groups will be assigned zero points to all groups involved. No replacement/alternate assignments will be made.

• Answer all sub questions (if any) of a problem for full credit for that problem.

• All questions are worth 10 points each.

• Present data and information in a tabular or graphical form as appropriate.

• Identify your answers clearly for quantitative questions.

• Use Level 2 CES EduPack to answer the EduPack-based questions - include all the graphs in your report. Identify materials on the graphs by using the label function available in EduPack.

• Late submissions will not be accepted.

1. Draw a bubble chart in Metric units showing tensile strength on X-axis and hardness (HV) on Y-axis. How do the hardness of ceramics, metals and polymers compare? Do you see any correlation between tensile strength and hardness? If yes, describe it in words.

2. Find materials where the following property requirements are met simultaneously:

(a) Minimum hardness of 300 HV

(b) Fracture toughness in excess of 100 MPa(m)0.5

(c) % elongation no less than 20%

List density and cost of these materials in metric units.

3 Draw a bubble chart with density as X-axis and elastic limit as Y axis in metric units. Using limit and intersect functions show the materials on the bubble chart that meet the following characteristics simultaneously:

(a) Production energy no higher that 25 MJ/kg

(b) CO2 production limited to 2 kg/kg

(c) Recyclable materials

Edit this bubble chart by changing the Y-axis to price. Which of the above materials is the cheapest? Which is the most expensive?

4. A material is required for gas grill grate. Documents what you would judge to be the design-limiting properties. Name three candidate materials.

5. Compare Young’s modulus E (the stiffness property), density, thermal conductivity ? (the heat transmission property), and cost of aluminum alloys (a non-ferrous metal), alumina (a technical ceramic), polyethylene (a thermoplastic polymer), neoprene (an elastomer), CFRP (a composite) and any one foam material by retrieving values from CES EduPack Level 2. Which is the stiffest and the most flexible material? Which has the lowest and the highest thermal conductivity? Which is the heaviest and the lightest material? Which is the cheapest and the most expensive material?

6. Research and describe selective laser sintering technologies for polymer and metal.

7. Research and describe metal power injection molding technology.

8. Research and describe biopolymer
