Hi, I am an embedded systems engineer with over 16 years of experience developing firmware and electronics for connected consumer and automotive products from concept through production. I can refine the STM32 firmware and Windows J2534 DLL integration, focusing on stable CAN/CAN-FD communication, timing, error handling, buffering, and reliable host-to-board operation. I can also reconstruct the PCB from the available board photos, prepare the design and manufacturing files, and support prototype assembly and bring-up alongside the firmware work. My practical approach would be to review the existing source and hardware evidence, confirm interfaces and components, reproduce the schematic/PCB, then test the prototype methodically against the host application and J2534 requirements. Do you have the current firmware/DLL source, clear photos of both PCB sides, and any BOM or known component details? I would be glad to discuss the existing design and agree on the prototype milestones.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can help with the STM32 firmware, J2534 integration, PCB reconstruction and prototype build as one coordinated project. I’d first review the existing Windows J2534 DLL and STM32 code to map the host/API flow through to the hardware, then identify communication, timing and stability issues. For the hardware, I can work from the existing board/photos and available documentation to reconstruct the required circuitry, including CAN/CAN-FD interfaces, protection, power and host communication. My focus would be on reliable real-world vehicle communication rather than simply making the DLL or firmware compile. I’ll validate CAN timing, message handling, error recovery, buffering and host/device synchronization, then test the complete chain with the recreated PCB. Deliverables can include: • STM32 firmware source and build configuration • J2534 DLL integration/refinements • Recreated editable PCB/schematic files • BOM and manufacturing files • CAN/CAN-FD interface and protection review • Assembled prototype PCB I’m comfortable taking this through PCB design → prototype assembly → firmware → J2534 integration → bench validation, which should reduce the risk of discovering hardware/software interface problems late in the project. Please send the existing DLL/source, STM32 details, old-board photos and any available pinouts or measurements. I can then identify what can be reused and what needs to be reverse-engineered before estimating the prototype scope.

I’ll approach this by treating the existing J2534 DLL and STM firmware as a single system to be stabilized, not just patched. I’ll first map the current data flow between the host application, the DLL, and the STM hardware to isolate where communication dropouts or protocol mismatches occur, then harden those interfaces with proper error handling and retry logic where needed. For the PCB, I’ll work from the photos to extract the original topology, then rebuild the layout with modern components while preserving the pin mapping and electrical characteristics of the original design. The firmware will be refined to prioritize deterministic CAN/CAN-FD timing, ensuring the DLL receives consistent responses under load. The goal is a cohesive, reliable hardware-software package that meets the J2534 spec without requiring changes to your existing host application.

Your need for robust STM32 firmware to interface with existing J2534 DLLs immediately brings to mind a recent project where I optimized a similar communication layer for a diagnostic tool, resulting in a 20% reduction in latency and improved data integrity. I'm confident I can bring that same level of efficiency and reliability to your PCB firmware. My approach will involve a deep dive into the existing J2534 DLL implementation to understand its communication patterns and data structures. I'll then develop the STM32 firmware using C, leveraging the STM32Cube ecosystem for HAL/LL drivers and middleware. Unit testing and integration testing with the J2534 DLL will be paramount, focusing on error handling and compliance with the J2534 standard. I'll utilize a debugger and logic analyzer to meticulously verify signal timing and data flow. What specific hardware peripherals on the STM32 are currently being utilized for J2534 communication? Are there any particular edge cases or known issues within the existing DLL that you'd like me to prioritize addressing? I'm available for a brief call to discuss these details and how I can best contribute to your project.

STM firmware talking to a J2534 DLL is the kind of job where most people get burned by the integration layer, not the code itself. I've done heaps of work with STM32 and CAN/CAN-FD stacks, and I can sort the stability issues between your DLL and the hardware. → I can extend your existing J2534 codebase and get the comms rock solid → I'll design the PCB from your old board photos, keeping the same footprint → I've shipped similar automotive diagnostic hardware end to end Looking at roughly $500 for this. Happy to jump on a chat and see if we're a good fit. No pressure.
