You are asking for a server people can walk into and start playing in immediately, so the build has to be readable at a glance and safe to hand to moderators who are not technical. What I set up, in the order I do it: 1. Channel architecture: a few top-level categories instead of a long flat list - in-character, out-of-character, voice, staff. Every text channel gets a written topic, so a newcomer knows where they are without asking. 2. Role hierarchy built around permissions rather than names: @everyone -> Unverified -> Member -> Roleplayer -> Storyteller -> Moderator -> Admin. Channel overwrites stay minimal because channels inherit from their category. This is the part that breaks six weeks later when someone adds one channel and forgets the permissions. 3. Onboarding: a #welcome channel with the rules, a reaction-role message so members tag themselves with the RP they want, and a #start-here post with three steps. New members land with only the channels they need and unlock the RP areas after reading the rules. 4. Bots: moderation, reaction roles, and one RP-support bot. Each is invited with only the intents it actually needs - over-permissioned bots are the number one way a community server gets compromised. 5. Handover: a short admin document with the role map, what each bot does, which permissions were deliberately restricted, and how to add a new RP channel without breaking inheritance. Two things I check on every build because they are silently broken on most servers: - category overwrites being contradicted by a channel overwrite, which makes a "private" channel public; - the @everyone "mention everyone" permission left switched on.
