Live Music - Search Web, Find Data, and Put Into Spreadsheet

This is a test project to see how easy it is to use the web to gather some data about selected live music performance venues in the US. You'll take the venue from a row in the spreadsheet, then search google with it to find that venue's website. Then you'll look at the website and return a few bits of information about it into the spreadsheet. We have 50 or more cities after this one to do, so it's important that you keep a good log of how much time this task takes and where the the innstructions were confusing. DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS Open the spreadsheet "Training Sample - [login to view URL]" attached. 1. Take the venue name from the list in Column B. 2. Use Google to find the website for that venue. 3. Go to the home page of that venue’s website. Look for the mailing address, probably at the bottom of the page, and confirm you have the right club by comparing that to columns C and D in the spreadsheet. 4. If it doesn’t match, go back to google and look again to find the venue. 4b. If it does match, proceed to no.5 5. Mark in the spreadsheet, in column F, whether the venue is open for business at all. 6. Then, Find a list or calendar view of all that venue’s events. In the site navigation, it’s probably behind a link that reads “Tickets”, “Shows” “Events”, “Schedule”, or “Calendar.” If none of that is visible in the navigation at the top of the page, there might be a “view all shows” link on the home page itself. 7. Once on the all-shows page or calendar, find at least two events happening next week that aren’t marked as “Sold Out”. (You might be able to find these on the website’s homepage, too.) 8. Confirm that the venue charges for admission to these shows. Usually the price of the ticket is listed, or sometimes the price of admission is listed inside the image that accompanies the event. Or you may see a “Tickets” or “Buy Tickets” button. 9. Record in column H of the spreadsheet whether the club charges for admission. If it doesn’t, mark column H as “N”, column J as as “N”, and column L as “None”. Otherwise move to step 10. 10. If you see a way to buy tickets for either of these shows online, mark that in the spreadsheet in Column J as “Y” and move to step 11. If not, mark column J as “N” and column L as “None”. 11. Then Click the link in each case and get to the first page of buying a ticket. Usually, it’s the page where you specify how many tickets you want. On that page, look in the browser’s location window and find the ticketing vendor by seeing what the name of the domain is. For example, [login to view URL] tells you that the vendor is “Tunestub.” You may also see the vendor’s logo on the page somewhere. 12. Mark the vendor in column L on the spreadsheet. 13. Use the notes column to add any comments that seem necessary to understand these issues for that venue. Some venues will actually support multiple online ticketing systems.
